Maruti Suzuki Swift Will Soon Get Mild-Hybrid Tech with the 1.2L DualJet Motor!

To compensate for the loss of the diesel engine, Maruti Suzuki will soon be launching the Swift with the 1.2L DualJet engine from the Baleno that gets mil-hybrid technology. With this, the Swift will also get a little more powerful.

The year 2020 marks 15 years of the Maruti Suzuki Swift in India and ever since its introduction in 2005, it has come a long way in our market. Growing up to be a hugely popular car among Indians, the Swift is currently in its forth-generation after it saw its introduction at the 2018 Auto Expo. Internationally, the Swift also got a facelift recently with subtle cosmetic changes and some more technology under its skin.

While its still unclear as to when Maruti Suzuki will bring this facelifted Swift to India, the tech under its skin we are talking about is much sooner on the cards. You might have already guessed it by now. Yes, we are talking about Maruti Suzuki’s SHVS 48V mild-hybrid technology and its going to be offered on the Swift very soon. Maruti Suzuki already offers this tech on the Ciaz and the Baleno. There are talks of it making it to the Vitara Brezza as well and soon on the Swift too.

Until very recently, Maruti Suzuki offered the Swift either with a 1.2L four-cylinder, petrol engine or Fiat’s 1.3L four-cylinder diesel engine. Stepping into the BS6 era, we saw Maruti Suzuki pulling the plug on the diesel versions of the Swift. This 1.3L diesel engine was very important to the Swift because of its frugal nature and brought in a large number of buyers to the Swift. Currently, with just a sole petrol engine in offering, Maruti Suzuki intends to fill up the void of the diesel engine on the Swift by offering the 1.2-litre DualJet mild-hybrid engine from the Baleno.

Currently, the 1.2L petrol engine on the Swift produces 82bhp and 113Nm of peak torque. The engine comes mated to either a 5-speed manual or AMT gearbox. With the introduction of the 1.2L DualJet mild-hybrid motor, the Swift will also become more powerful with 89bhp but its torque will remain identical at 113Nm. In the Baleno, the DualJet motor has an ARAI-certified fuel-economy of 23.87 kmpl and the Swift too could have similar figures. And there you have it, the loss of the diesel engine could well be compensated with advantages of a petrol motor.

Maruti Suzuki’s 48V SHVS mild-hyrid system essentially comprises of a lithium-ion battery that improves fuel economy and also improves thermal efficiency of the engine by reducing friction. The SHVS tech assist with acceleration without compromising on the frugality and it also recovers energy from braking to charge the batteries for assisting torque and idle start/stop functions. The mild-hybrid tech will be great addition to the Swift. It will not only bring back diesel customers to the Swift but it also grows a little more powerful and perhaps a little more fun too. The launch is expected in the coming months.
