Maruti WagonR is the most practical hatchbacks in India while Baleno is one of the most popular and sporty looking ones. Let’s see how they fare against each other.
Maruti WagonR got an update last year with a new generation version, more features and a more powerful engine as well. Now, it shares the engine with Baleno, Dzire, Ignis and Swift. The power figures are also the same for all of them, except for the newly launched Dzire and Baleno Smart-Hybrid variants.
Here, the new Maruti WagonR and Baleno have been put against each other in a quick drag race. The Baleno comes with a 1.2 Litre engine but this WagonR gets a 1.0 Litre engine. You might be expecting Baleno to have a clear win above WagonR because the latter has nothing sporty about it. Well, you are about to be shocked.

In the first attempt, both the cars are at a neck to neck speed and refused to let down. Till the end, both racing at each other’s neck and cross the finish line together. In the second attempt, you can see the WagonR having a clear victory. Yes, it beats the Baleno by a very small margin though. The third attempt shows Baleno as a winner but there seems to be some initial lag with the tall boy.
If we put the power to weight ratio of both the cars, Baleno is ahead by just 1 PS. Despite WagonR being underpowered, it is nearly 150 kilograms lighter than the Baleno. Over the years, we have known that Maruti’s 1.0 Litre three-cylinder unit is peppy in smaller cars. For instance, the power to weight ratio of S-Presso is 93 BHP per tonne! The ratio of WagonR with a 1.2 Litre engine is 100 BHP.
Baleno’s 1.2 Litre four-cylinder unit produces 83 PS and 113 Nm of peak torque. WagonR, on the other hand, produces 67 PS and 91 Nm of peak torque. Baleno also gets a smart-hybrid system on some variants which delivers 7 PS more with the same torque. It is also slightly more efficient.

Gearbox options on Baleno include a 5-speed MT and a CVT. The WagonR comes mated to a 5-speed MT and a 5-speed AMT, latter only available on the bigger engine. Keep looking out on our website for more such races between cars that we see on our roads everyday, every minute.
