BMW has launched a new entry-level 30d xDrive SportX variant of the X5 in India which is Rs 8 lakh cheaper than the xLine variant at the cost of a few fancy features. It is also a little less bling.

BMW has launched a new entry-level variant in the X5 line-up in India, called the SportX. The new BMW X5 SportX variant has been priced at Rs 74.90 lakh (ex-showroom, India) and it replaces the previous Sport trim that was discontinued sometime ago. The new SportX trim also lowers the entry price point in the X5 range where the 30d xLine and 40i M Sport are priced at Rs 82.90 lakh and Rs 84.40 lakh, respectively. So what makes this new 30d SportX variant Rs 8 lakh cheaper than the 30d xLine? Let’s find out.

The SportX variant of course has a much shorter feature list than the xLine variant. It misses out on quite a few fancy goodies like air suspension, laser headlamps, 360-degree camera, BMW’s display key, Harman Kardon surround sound system, front passenger seat memory function and launch control. It however is not completely bare bones and comes equipped quite decently indeed.

Features onboard the SportX variant include adaptive suspension, dual 12.3-inch displays for infotainment and instrumentation, cruise control, panoramic sunroof, LED headlamps, powered front seats with driver memory, four-zone climate control, rear-view camera, and more. There are also some key visual differences on the outside by which you can tell this entry-level variant from the rest of the pack. The most noticeable of these are the smaller 19-inch wheels instead of the 20-inch wheels on the xLine variant.

The SportX variant is also a lot lesser bling than the higher-spec variants as a lot of chrome on the front and side profile of the SUV has been replaced with a gloss black trim. On the inside, the SportX variant gets different wood inserts and upholstery. Under the hood, the SportX variant is however identical to xLine variant. It is powered by the same 3.0-litre, inline six-cylinder diesel engine which produced 265hp and 620Nm of peak torque. The engine comes mated to an 8-speed automatic gearbox and power is sent to all four wheels via BMW’s xDrive all-wheel-drive system.

It turns out that BMW’s new entry-level X5 xDrive30d SportX has a direct competitor in the Mercedes-Benz GLE 300d. The latter is priced at Rs 73.3 lakh (ex-showroom) and they are very comparable in terms of size and equipment on offer as well. However, it must be mentioned that the Mercedes GLE 300d is powered by a four-cylinder diesel engine where the BMW has an upper hand with six cylinders.
