The second-generation Mercedes GLC has been spied once again. The all-new model is still a couple of years away from showrooms but, when it does arrive, it’ll sport a brand new design language, a fresh range of mild-hybrid engines and the same interior technology destined for the 2021 Mercedes C-Class.
Based on these clearer spy shots, the new look will be evolutionary rather than revolutionary, with this new GLC retaining the same chunky two-box design as the outgoing model, albeit with a fresh pair of LED headlamps and a reshaped tailgate.
However, due to the platform revisions, the second-generation GLC will be longer than the current car, with a larger nose and tail – as indicated by this mule’s extended front overhang, thicker C-pillar and wider rear-quarter window.
Interior revisions should be far more involved, with the GLC expected to receive a completely redesigned dashboard layout. Based on what we know of the next C-Class, Mercedes’s next infotainment system will dominate the cabin, stretching from the bottom of the centre console and combining a central display with a new digital instrument binnacle.
Like the upcoming replacement for the Mercedes C-Class, the new GLC will be based on an updated version of Mercedes’s MRA underpinnings. The reworked platform has a longer wheelbase and is outfitted with a suite of upgrades which will support the shift towards a completely electrified powertrain line-up.
The new GLC’s engine range will consist of four and six-cylinder petrol and diesel engines, each supported by a belt-driven starter generator and a tiny battery pack. As on the C-Class, the system will provide an extra 14bhp and allow the SUV’s combustion engine to deactivate on the motorway for fuel-free coasting.
A more efficient plug-in hybrid version of the GLC is also expected to appear. Mercedes is planning an updated version of the C-Class PHEV, with fresh battery technology that has the potential to offer 50 miles of all-electric range – and we expect the same technology will be applied across the GLC model change.
