Skoda is reportedly working on a sub-compact SUV to rival the likes of the Venue and Brezza. It will come after the Vision IN mid-size SUV, perhaps by 2023 and will be part of India 3.0 project.
Skoda Auto India along with Volkswagen India have embarked on a journey with an intention to shake up the Indian automotive market. Volkswagen Group’s India 2.0 strategy will see both the brands launch many new vehicles in India. The first of these two products under the India 2.0 strategy will be the upcoming Skoda Vision IN and the Volkswagen Taigun SUV, both of which are mid-sized SUVs and will take on the likes of the Hyundai Creta and the Kia Seltos.
Now do not confuse Skoda’s recent slew of launches with the India 2.0 strategy. Skoda recently launched the Rapid 1.0L TSI, the new Superb and also the Karoq SUV. These vehicles are however not part of the India 2.0 strategy and it will only begin by the coming of the mid-size SUVs which will be locally manufactured vehicles and will be very competitively priced. Both of these SUVs will be underpinned by the MQB AO IN platform and although they will be similar under the skin, they will have very different identities from each other.
Part of the India 2.0 project also involves a new B-Segment sedan from both the brands which are set to replace the ageing Volkswagen Vento and the Skoda Rapid. These B-segment sedan are however only going to come in 2022 and for now, the current-gen Vento and Rapid will soldier on for some more time. There are now new reports on the internet which claim that Skoda is even looking at the sub-compact SUV space going ahead in the future.

Deemed to be part of what is being referred to as the India 3.0 strategy, this new sub-compact SUV from Skoda will take on the likes of the Hyundai Venue, the Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza, the Tata Nexon and others from this class. This is meant to bring the brand even greater amount of volumes and like the mid-size SUV, this too will be locally manufactured for a very competitive pricing. However, this will happen only after the successful completion of the India 2.0 project, perhaps by 2023 or the earliest possibility is late 2022.

The Volkswagen group has already invested heavily on the India 2.0 project and they are really banking on this to turn their fortunes in India. The slew of launches from Skoda and Volkswagen that we saw recently was only a precursor to what’s going to come in the future. It showcases the brand’s potential and their technological prowess. There’s a lot to be excited about from Skoda and Volkswagen and we are definitely looking forward to it.
