Tata Motors End JTP Venture, And With It, More JTP Cars!

Tata Motors has announced the end of the JTP venture with Jayem Automotives and thus the Tiago JTP and Tigor JTP see the end of the road too. Few sales and a critical market situation is what brought about this painful demise.

The Tata Tigor and Tiago JTP, when they arrived about two years ago, blew away everyone’s mind with the package that they were. We have seen very few cars in the Indian market that come with as superb a combination of everyday usability and thrilling performance. The biggest factor which made the Tata JTP cars such a promising product were their surprisingly affordable sticker price which brought performance to the hands of many, some who had no experience of it before.

Tata has now discontinued the Tiago and Tigor JTP in India and there will likely be no more JTP cars in the future either.

Unfortunately, like most good things come to an end, Tata has now ended the JTP venture, thus discontinuing both the Tiago JTP and the Tigor JTP. There likely will be no more JTP cars in the future either. These Tata JTP cars were a product of a joint venture between Tata Motors and Jayem Automotives. Although Tata Motors has acquired their 50% stake in JTSV (Jayem Tata Special Vehicles), the joint venture which gave birth to these hotted up Tatas, Tata Motors have announced that there isn’t much of a business case left for such ventures, particularly in the current situation.

Read it in their own words : “In light of this ongoing scenario, both Tata Motors and Jayem Automotives found it prudent to discontinue this venture. The passenger car industry witnessed a challenging FY19-20, exacerbated with mandatory change in regulations and the current COVID-19 pandemic, which has impacted the demand in this niche category of vehicles.” We only have the economy and a certain virus to blame for taking away some really fun to drive cars, and of course, the BS6 emissions too.

To give you a recap, the Tata Tiago JTP and the Tigor JTP were powered by a 1.2L turbo-petrol engine which produced 114PS of power and 150Nm of torque. This engine was derived from the Nexon but produced 4PS more in the JTP cars. The torque was capped at 150Nm but because the JTP cars were much smaller and lighter than the Nexon, they really came to their element when you pinned the throttle. Not only was their straight line performance amazing but a lowered ride height, retuned dampers and bigger wheels meant that it went pretty well around the corners too.

Tata has however ensured that present JTP owners will get continued support for their beloved machines. It shouldn’t be much of a problem for Tata either as the JTP cars were based on platforms that are shared with regular cars and even the engines come from bigger Tatas. While there were many who were hoping more JTP cars like the Altroz JTP or the Nexon JTP, its a shame the world will never see JTP iterations of these vehicles. Current owners of JTP cars will certainly be looked at with a lot of envy from now on.
