The 2020 BMW S 1000 XR is an adventure-cum-sports touring cousin of the S 1000 RR and comes with premium components and a stunning 999cc inline four engine for a price of Rs 20.90 lakh.
After launching the F 900 twins a couple of months ago, BMW Motarrad has now launched the 2020 S 1000 XR in India for a price of Rs 20.90 lakh (ex-showroom India). The new 2020 S 1000 XR is about Rs 40,000 more expensive than the previous bike’s Pro variant. The new S 1000 XR is just available in one trim and bookings for the liter-class adventure-cum-sports tourer has already been on for some time. Deliveries of the motorcycle will begin in the coming weeks.
The S 1000 XR is one of the more popular products in BMW’s lineup. Although the company categorizes the S 1000 XR to be a part of their adventure series of motorcycles, the S 1000 XR is only suited for riding on the tarmac. Just like the previous S 1000 XR, the new motorcycle is also based on its sportsbike cousin, the S 1000 RR. The new S 1000 XR follows a similar styling approach as the S 1000 RR and sees a dramatic design overhaul thus. Just like its sportsbike cousin, the S 1000 XR has done away with the asymmetrical headlamps and instead gets sharper LED headlamps.
And it’s not like the S 1000 XR appears to be jacked up S 1000 RR. Both the motorcycles look quite different with different faces and identities. The semi-fared design of the S 1000 XR with a small beak and a tall windscreen sets it quite apart. The new bike is also much lighter than before, 10 kgs to be precise and tips the scale at 226kg. The motorcycle is powered by a 999cc inline four-cylinder engine that produces 165PS and 114Nm. In fact, the output figures are the same as before.

However, BMW has skipped on the ShiftCam technology or Variable Valve Timing (VVT) with the new S 1000 XR. This tech would have essentially made the motorcycle a lot more usable in everyday riding situations. The new BMW S 1000 XR however comes loaded to the brim with electronic rider aids. It gets the usual multiple riding modes and traction control, but apart from that, it also gets wheelie control, engine drag torque control, a bi-directional quickshifter, cruise control and even a hill start assist. Some of these functions are aided by a six-axis IMU, enabling better calibration.

Other mechanical hardware on the new S 1000 XR is also top-notch. That includes adjustable suspension units at both ends for ZF and for braking duties, it gets twin 320mm rotors with Hayes monobloc calipers at the front while the rear gets a 220mm disc with a single-piston caliper. The braking hardware is the same as on the S 1000 RR. The motorcycle rides on 17-inch alloy wheels which come wrapped in touring-spec rubber. In terms of rivals, the S 1000 XR goes against the likes of the Kawasaki Versys 1000. However, the Kawasaki is almost half the price of the BMW at Rs 10.89 lakh. The BMW on the other hand is the more premium, powerful and feature-rich product.
