BS6 BMW G 310 R and G 310 GS Spotted Testing in India; Launch Soon!

The BS6 iterations of the BMW G 310 R and G 310 GS are expected to be significantly cheaper than the BS4 models and we also hope BMW brings about the same changes as was brought by TVS on the BS6 Apache RR 310.

BMW Motarrad already has had a few important launches this year with the new F 900 middleweight twins and they are soon going to launch the S 1000 XR in India as well. But more important than these are new BS6 G 310 R and G 310 GS for BMW Motarrad in India. These motorcycles have been spied testing in India now and it hints that the Bavarian motorcycle manufacturer will soon be shifting focus to its entry-level space after the launch of the liter-class tourer.

This isn’t the first time that the new G 310s have ben spotted testing. We had already reported to you with spy images of these motorcycles earlier when they were spotted testing in Europe. From those images, we already knew that the BS6 iterations of the G 310 R and G 310 GS will be getting new LED headlamps and that’s a welcome change, really. The previous halogen units were not the brightest and moreover, anything without LEDs these days look drastically old. So it also helps the look of the motorcycle.

But what we are more interested to find is whether BMW has fixed the refinement issues of the BS4-spec G 310s that really pulled the motorcycles back. These are otherwise very friendly machines with good performance but were really let down by the vibrations from the engine and their harshness. The other motorcycle that uses this engine – the TVS Apache RR 310 – was completely revamped when it saw its BS6 update and came with significant improvements.

With its BS6 update, the Apache RR 310 even got ride-by-wire, riding modes, new engine internals and better engine mounts too. While the improvements completely filtered out the vibrations from the 312.2cc engine, its harshness was also considerably subdued. The harshness at the top-end do not feel as troublesome as before either. We hope BMW has taken note of these changes introduced by TVS on the Apache RR 310 and we hope the same are implemented on the G 310 Twins as well.

What also is expected to change with the BS6 iterations of the BMW G 310 R and G 310 GS is their pricing. You see, BMW Motarrad was not quite able to make a mark with their most affordable bikes in India because they were still priced at a premium. The last BS4 stocks of the G 310s were sold for heavy discounts, so BMW will be looking at significantly cutting the prices of both the bikes. The BS4 spec G 310 R was priced at Rs 2.99 lakh while the GS was priced at 3.49 lakh. Its rivals – the Honda CB300R, the KTM Duke 390 and Apache RR 310 are a little more affordable – and have done reasonably well indeed. Let’s hope they come at a killer price and become irresistible for being the most affordable BMW Motarrads in the country.
