BS6 Honda Civic Diesel Launched; Price Increases only Marginally!

The VX trim of the new BS6 Honda Civic diesel see a price hike of only Rs 20,000 while the price of top-end ZX trim remains unchanged. It’s now available from Rs 20.75 – Rs 22.35 alkh, ex-showroom.

After opening bookings for the BS6 Civic Diesel earlier this month, Honda has now launched the car in India. The BS6 Honda Civic diesel is now available in the country for a price of Rs 20.75 lakh for the VX trim and goes up to Rs 22.35 lakh for the top-end ZX trim, all prices ex-showroom. While the prices for the VX trim has gone up by Rs 20,000, the price of the ZX trim remains the same as BS-4 spec car. That’s really a minimal increase in price and is rather a surprise as we had expected a more significant price hike.

The BS6 Honda Civic Diesel continues with the same 1.6 Litre i-DTEC diesel engine. Honda had earlier discontinued this engine when we entered the BS6 era but it is now back again. The engine produces 120 PS and 300 Nm of peak torque which might sound a bit underwhelming for its class. As before, the engine comes mated to a 6-speed manual gearbox as standard fitment. Honda is still not offering an automatic gearbox with the Civic diesel just as they are not doing with the new-gen City either.

With the BS6 upgrade however, fuel efficiency of the Civic diesel has taken quite a significant hit. The BS4-spec Honda Civic diesel had an ARAI-certified fuel economy of 26.8 kmpl while the new BS6 model has an ARAI-certified fuel economy figure of only 23.9 kmpl. The other engine option on the Civic includes a 1.8 Litre i-VTEC petrol engine that produces 141 PS and 174 Nm of peak torque. In fact, this engine solely comes mated to a CVT automatic gearbox.

Apart from the engine update, both trims of the Civic diesel now come with six airbags as standard. The VX trim gets additional curtain airbags now which justifies the Rs 20,000 hike in price for the sedan. Apart from that, the Civic has always been a well equipped car its segment and it continues that trend. Features onboard Honda Civic include LED projector headlamps, LED DRLs, Lane Watch Assist Camera, Electric Sunroof, Auto-Dimming IRVMs, 7-inch touchscreen infotainment with Android Auto and Apple Car Play, Reverse Parking Sensors with a Multi-view camera, heated seats, 60:40 split rear seats and much more.

The Honda Civic is currently in its 10th generation in India and has been doing fairly well even in the dwindling executive sedan market in India. The Honda Civic has only one competitor in the Indian market and that’s the Hyundai Elantra. When Skoda brings their new-gen Octavia later this year and in early-2021, this segment will hopefully see some more action. In other news, Honda has already started testing the next-gen Civic sedan internationally but there’s still some time before it makes it to India.
