Suzuki Jimny To Be Discontinued In Europe – Here’s The Reason Why

Suzuki has discontinued the Jimny in UK and will soon be out of the European market. The off-roader was launched back in 2018.

Suzuki’s biggest launch in the recent years is the Jimny, which has picked up a storm in the global markets. Now, in its third generation, the small SUV is very popular in the European markets as well as its homeland. Reports now suggest that it will soon be discontinued in the European markets.

Next year, new emission norms in the European markets will be introduced. The norms will be stricter and the current Jimny will not fit in that. That’s the reason for Suzuki axing the Jimny in the Europe but will relaunch it with a cleaner engine. Dealerships in UK have already stopped taking bookings and soon, other European countries will also follow the process.

Speculations suggest that the Jimny might not be relaunched as a private vehicle but a commercial one. After making necessary adjustments to the seating, it will be posed as a cab. The emission norms are different for commercial vehicles and in that, even the current Jimny easily fits.

Suzuki Jimny gets a 1.5 Litre K15B petrol engine that produces 104 PS and 138 Nm of peak torque. The motor comes paired with a 5-speed MT and a 4-speed AT. Available in a 3-door format, the small SUV is loved by many off-road enthusiasts. The global-spec version actually has some off-roading tech equipped.

Talking about the India launch, there are still strong reports indicating that the Jimny is coming. It was showcased at the Auto Expo 2020 but in a 3-door format. In our country, if the Jimny comes, it will be in a five-door format. The engine and gearbox options will remain the same but the dimensions will be larger.

Chances are that Maruti could launch it in early 2021 itself. If launched, the SUV will come in the 8-10 Lakhs price range. It will compete with the likes of Mahindra Thar and Force Gurkha, probably a cheaper alternative to them.
