Here’s How The International Media Reacted to the new Mahindra Thar!

The all-new Mahindra Thar has already gained some interest abroad and people can’t help but draw comparisons with the Jeep Wrangler. So here’s what some renounced international publications had to say about the all-new Thar.

Mahindra unveiled the new-gen Thar earlier this month and the automotive world is currently going head over heals about the new off-road. Now there’s no denying that the Thar clearly draws inspiration from the Jeep Wrangler and while we Indians definitely like that, there might be other opinions elsewhere. The Thar will be manufactured here in India but it will be exported to some international markets too. Incidentally, the Mahindra Thar is a fairly popular vehicle around the world, particularly in the USA, where Mahindra launched the Roxor sometime back.

Mahindra also recently gained a lot of interest in the USA after FCA filed a lawsuit against Mahindra for taking inspiration from the Jeep Wrangler for the Roxor. Mahindra lost the case and actually had to change the design of the Roxor. Naturally, the Thar has got some attention from the international media and here’s what the world thinks about the Thar. There are a few articles and even a video from TFLofforad about the new Thar.

Jalopnik

Jalopnik says that the new Thar has been civilized and most dramatic change has to be the independent front suspension. They say that even though the Thar and the Wrangler have come from the same source, the Thar has its own identify and does not bear the cultural burdens of the Wrangler. Jalopnik also says that design of the new Mahindra Thar looks like the 90s Jeep Wrangler TJ.

The biggest, most dramatic change in the Thar—even if it’s one that’s not really visually obvious to most people—is that it now has independent front suspension. This would be pretty unthinkable on a new Jeep Wrangler, but the Thar, even though springing from the same original source as the Wrangler, is less saddled with the cultural burdens of a Jeep, so when Mahindra decided they wanted something that was more comfortable and quieter on paved roads, this decision makes sense.

TFLoffroad

The Fast Lane is one of the most popular american publications and they have appreciated the Thar’s all round versatility along with its off-road prowess. They have also appreciated the fact that’s its extremely affordable and that its not fair to compare the Thar with the Wrangler as both have completely different chassis, engine and even off-road equipment. For its expected price, the Thar would be about $13,000 in the USA whereas the Wrangler starts from about $28,000, which is more than double. Carscoops

Carscoops however thinks that the Thar is an ugly looking Jeep Wrangler and that Mahindra has heavily copied the design of the Thar. Even the interiors have been inspired from the previous-gen Wrangler. They also said that the seven-slat grille and the circular headlamps are very Jeep-like too.

Looking like a Jeep Wrangler knockoff, the Thar has a seven slot grille which is flanked by circular headlights. That’s very Jeep-like. It borrows heavily from the previous-generation Wrangler – even using circular air vents in similar locations. Drivers will also find a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system, faux carbonfibre trim and a TFT display in the instrument cluster. Customers also choose between four and six-person seating configurations.
