The KTM 250 Adventure has been spied testing in India and we expect the motorcycle to launch by the end of this year. Its quite an important product for KTM in India as the 390 Adventure didn’t fare all that well.
Indians have hugely grown their taste towards adventure motorcycles and we have seen several new ADVs make their way to India in the last couple of years. However, most of these ADVs are mostly high displacement motorcycles, with very few catering to the masses. For the masses, we only have the Hero XPulse 200 and the Royal Enfield Himalayan. You could also say we also have the BMW G 310 GS, but that’s no cheap anyway. There’s however a new ADV motorcycle on the horizon for India which will be fairly affordable and that’s the KTM 250 Adventure.
The KTM 250 Adventure was first spied towards the end of 2019 and while KTM went ahead and launched the 390 Adventure at the India Bike Week 2019, the 250 Adventure somehow went under the radar, until now. The KTM 250 Adventure has now again been spotted testing in India and that gives us hope that we could see its launch towards the end of 2020. IT will after all be a very important product for KTM in India as it will be much cheaper than the 390 Adventure and will naturally find a wider audience.
It is particularly more important for KTM to get the 250 Adventure right for India as the 390 Adventure didn’t quite make a mark as was expected. That’s surprising, because the 390 Duke is a hugely popular motorcycle but its ADV cousin couldn’t quite make it because of its high price tag of Rs 3.04 lakh (ex-showroom). Its the most expensive made-in-India KTM motorcycle and about Rs 40,000 more expensive than the Duke 390. Keeping the margins similar, we expect the 250 Adventure to be priced around Rs 2.40 lakh, making it much more accessible to the buyers.

The 250 Adventure will actually have a lot in common with the 390 Adventure – similar instrument cluster with the TFT screen, frame, wheels, braking hardware, and also the switchable dual-channel ABS. Additionally, the 250 Adventure will even feature adjustable USD fork at the front which the India-spec 390 Adventure misses out on. Another point of difference will be tires, where the 250 Adventure will run on MRF Mogrip Meteor-FM2 dual-purpose tyres while the 390 Adventure runs on Metzeler Tourance tires. KTM also recently updated the Duke 250 with new LED headlamps from the Duke 390, and while the test mule does not feature that, it remains to be seen if the final model comes with the new headlamps.

At its heart, the 250 Adventure will be powered by the same 250cc single-cylinder engine that powers the Duke 250. In BS6 guise, this motor produces 30PS of power and 24Nm of torque. It will also come mated to the same 6-speed gearbox but we are unsure if KTM will be altering the gear ratios for the Adventure model. With the 250 Adventure, it will be forth motorcycle using the 250cc engine, the others being the Duke 250 and the Husqvarna Svartpilen 250 and Vitpilen 250.
