Tata Altroz Diesel is now the most fuel-efficient hatchback of India, but this is still not the best mileage figures among all diesel cars.
Tata Altroz is the latest hatchback to enter the Indian market, competing with the likes of Maruti Baleno, Hyundai i20, Toyota Glanza and Honda Jazz. As of now, there are very few diesel hatchbacks left in India, among which Altroz is now the most fuel-efficient. Along with being the safest hatchback in India, it also offers the best mileage figures among all hatchbacks.
As claimed officially, Tata Altroz Diesel offers a mileage of 25.11 kmpl. It comes in a close call with the Hyundai Grand i10 Nios Diesel, which gives out 25.1 kmpl. Altroz is now the second most fuel-efficient diesel car of India coming behind Hyundai Aura. The small sedan offers a claimed mileage of 25.40 kmpl.

In its class of premium hatchbacks, Altroz is the only one to offer a diesel engine right now. You might consider Freestyle also in the same space, but is actually a segment below. Very soon, Hyundai is going to launch the new generation i20 which will get a diesel engine. BS6 Jazz is reportedly not getting a diesel engine.
Altroz gets a 1.5 Litre four-cylinder turbo diesel engine that produces 90 BHP and 220 Nm of peak torque. This engine is also seen on the Nexon but has been detuned for better fuel efficiency. It comes mated to a 5-speed manual hatchback as standard fitment. There are rumours that in the near future, Tata might offer it with an automatic gearbox, but that is not sure.
The other engine on offer is Tiago’s 1.2 Litre three-cylinder petrol engine that produces 86 BHP and 116 Nm of peak torque. Reports suggest that Altroz will also get a 1.2 Litre turbo petrol engine that produces around 110-115 PS. Now that Tata’s partnership with JTP has been resolved, there is no surety of it.

Prices of Altroz commence at Rs 5.29 Lakhs up to Rs 7.69 Lakhs. The diesel variants are priced from Rs 6.99 Lakhs up to Rs 9.34 Lakhs (all prices ex-showroom). Features onboard include a Harmon Kardon touchscreen infotainment system, automatic headlamps, dual airbags, rear parking camera, digital instrument cluster, ambient lighting and more.
