The global unveil of the next-gen Mahindra Thar is only a week away but these new spy shots reveal some very interesting details about the SUV ahead of its unveil. We promise these are the last set of spy images you will see.
The unveil of the next-gen Mahindra Thar is just round the corner on August 15, and we know you are tired of seeing the numerous spy shots of the Thar already. This however is the last set of spy images of the Thar you will see. The Thar here in these images is the production-spec SUV, but still heavily wrapped. We are very excited about the new Thar and we bring to you these images because they reveal some new details about the Thar ahead of its official unveil. So let’s dive right in.
Although most of the SUV is heavily wrapped, it still reveals some very interesting details. The first of them would be numerous but subtle ‘Thar’ branding all over the car, from the wing mirrors, the LED tail lamps and even the door pads on the inside. The test mule spied here is the hard-top version and not only do the pictures reveal the glass area for the rear section but it also reveals how the thick body cladding wraps around the SUV towards its rear. The flared wheel arches have been executed very well and surprisingly, they do not extend very far away from the body of the SUV.
The same seems to apply for the front wheel arches as well. Although seen from under the wraps, the wheel arches are quite conservative and yet look proportionate, bold and chunky. The hood appears to be fairly flat but we cannot comment on the details on the face of the SUV as they are completely covered. At the rear, the LED tail lamps are in full display and there’s also a tail gate mounted spare wheel. The bumper at the rear has reflector boxes with a silver skid plate as well. What’s really interesting about the rear portion is that there are hinges above the rear glass section. This suggest that the rear windscreen of the Thar can be individually opened which will be a really cool feature indeed.
What can be clearly seen in these spy images are the interiors. And as you can see, the dashboard design is completely new with all the modern day amenities you can wish for. The seats look a lot more premium with white contrast stitching. There are different materials used for the dashboard like the silver trim around the climate controls, the faux carbon fiber effect around the AC vents, a new touchscreen infotainment system, a new steering wheel and gear lever and overall feel of the cabin seems much more premium than before. Here we also get a look at the rear with premium seats, a large window area, exposed rivets and even the roof mounted speaker.

While the previous-gen Thar was only available with a diesel engine and a manual gearbox, the new Thar will also get a petrol engine and automatic gearbox options for the first time. The Thar will in fact debut Mahindra’s new 2.0L petrol engine from the mStallion engine family and apart from a 6-speed manual gearbox as standard, there will also be an automatic gearbox option. The diesel engine will be Mahindra’s 2.2-litre mHawk unit with nearly 140hp on tap. The power output has also significantly gone up to make it a better highway cruiser. There will be a 6-speed manual gearbox as standard with the diesel engine but it will also get an Aisin-sourced 6-speed torque converter automatic gearbox. Also, both the engines will be offered with four-wheel drive system.

We expect the 2020 Thar to reach showrooms by this festive season. With an expected starting price of about Rs 10 lakh, the new Thar sure wouldn’t be cheap anymore. But it has also grown by leaps and bounds and will also be a much larger vehicle than the one it replaces. With its improved aesthetics and nature that could appeal more to the masses rather than just off-road enthusiasts, the new Thar is a very promising product for Mahindra.
