Check out this video as MG Motors puts the Gloster through its paces in some challenging off-road conditions involving steep inclines and descents, water wading capacity, suspension travel, wheel articulation and grip over loose surfaces.
MG Motors is all set to launch their third and perhaps their most important car of 2020 – the Gloster – this festive season and now, the carmaker has teased us with some footage showing the Gloster off-road in all its glory. The Gloster is considerably larger and more premium than any of its rivals and to take such a brute of an SUV off-road, MG Motors has thrown in quite some goodies to make it a capable off-roader. It also gives the Gloster an edge over its rivals, being the most premium off-roader in its class.
As you can see in the video below, the SUV is put through quite some challenging obstacles and it overcomes all of them with great composure. Suspension travel, wheel articulation, steep inclines and descents, water wading capacity, grip over loose surfaces – the MG Gloster was tested for all of the above aspects and it took them all in its stride. The Gloster comes with a terrain management system with five different drive modes – Mud, Rock, Sand, and Snow are the first to be revealed. Along with on-demand four-wheel drive, the Gloster also gets rear locking differential that can be enabled with just a press of a button.
The Gloster also comes with a multi-link rear suspension and a double-wishbone suspension up front. Water wading depth for the SUV is rated at 550mm. The SUV also gets a large floating touchscreen infotainment system which displays a lot of information which may be required to assist the driver during any off-road adventure. As standard, the SUV seems to be sunning on 18-inch wheels with road-biased tires. All-terrain tires will be more suited if you plan to take your Gloster through challenging off-road situations more frequently.

What’s under the hood is also equally important to take this mammoth of an SUV that extra mile in tricky conditions. The MG Gloster will be powered by a 2.0-litre, twin-turbo, four-cylinder diesel engine in India. This engine has been developed in-house by SIAC, MG’s parent company, and it produces 218hp and 480Nm of torque. The power and torque outputs are notably higher than all other body-on-frame SUVs of this size and segment – Ford Endeavour (170hp, 420Nm), Toyota Fortuner (177hp, 450Nm) and Mahindra Alturas G4 (181hp, 420Nm).

Some of the highlight features on the Gloster includes a ‘floating’ 12.3-inch touchscreen, a full-digital instruments screen, a yacht-style gear selector for the automatic transmission, a large panoramic sunroof, and hands-free tailgate opening. The third row on the Gloster is a bench seat with space for three. The MG Gloster is expected to hit showrooms in October this year and it is expected to be priced around Rs 40-45 lakhs for the top-spec variants. Yes, it will be significantly more expensive than its immediate rivals but its also way more premium and much more feature packed than what the competition has to offer.
