Audi has unveiled the new Q5 Sportback based on the facelift of the standard SUV that was unveiled some time ago. Although the standard Q5 SUV is coming to India early next year, there are no words yet of this funky looking variant making it to India.
Audi revealed a facelift for the India-bound Q5 SUV just some time ago and now, they have a more flamboyant variant added the the Q5 lineup. The new Audi Q5 Sportback keeps up the trends of Coupe-SUVs but it is one of those that has managed to get it quite right. The standard Q5 SUV was already a handsome little car with the facelift but now, having seen this Coupe version, we think this is best looking Q5 in the lineup. Let’s look at it in a little more detail.
The Audi Q5 is the third SUV in Audi’s lineup to receive the Sportback treatment after the Q3 and the e-tron. While most of the styling on the face of the SUV is identical to the standard Q5 facelift that was unveiled some time ago, it is from the B-Pillar that the changes are noticeable. Post the B-Pillar, the roofline slopes down just so elegantly and flows cleanly to the boot. The tail gate too had to be redesigned with a sharp kink resembling the original Audi Quattro. All the glitter in the form of the OLED lights have been retained from the standard SUV as well.
There are not many changes on the inside however. We are so glad Audi didn’t introduce their twin-screen setup here on the Q5 Sportback. The climate control stack has still been kept manual with buttons and dials and its great that way. The design language is of older Audi’s with a floating infotainment display but it does not get the swivel wheel anymore. Instead, the infotainment system is a touch-based unit. Audi’s new MIB 3 system is 10 times more faster than its predecessor, it gets connected car tech and also Amazon’s Alexa platform. Audi’s virtual cockpit is a standard fitment.

Internationally, the new Q5 Sportback will be offered with 2.0L turbo-diesel engine initially, producing 204PS of power and 400Nm of torque. The engine will come mated to a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox and this being an Audi SUV, power is sent to all four wheels via Audi’s Quattro system. The engine also gets a mild hybrid setup that cuts off the engine while the car is coasting. Audi will also offer a 4-cylinder TFSI petrol engine and a larger and more powerful V6 diesel.

The most important question is if its coming to India. Well, there has been no official word from Audi about bringing this to India yet. However, its two closest rivals – BMW X4 and the Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupe – are both on sale in India and it only makes great sense for Audi to join the competition. What is however definitely coming to our shores is the standard Q5 facelift SUV, slated for a launch early next year as a petrol-only SUV. Expect prices for Audi’s upcoming SUV to start in the range of Rs 55 lakh (ex-showroom).
