The Volkswagen ID.4 is the brand’s first all-electric vehicle and we could possible look at a market launch of the ID.4 in India sometime in 2022. The ID.4 is a rear-wheel drive 204PS SUV with a WLTP range of up to 520 km.
We saw the concept car in India at the 2020 Auto Expo, and now Volkswagen has taken the wraps off their first all-electric SUV – the Volkswagen ID.4. After a lot of anticipation and countless teasers, in flesh, the VW ID.4 does not look very different from the concept its based on. It’s based on the Volkswagen Group’s MEB platform, which also underpins its Skoda sibling – the Enyaq IV electric SUV – which is also Skoda’s first all-electric vehicle and was unveiled earlier this month.
The Volkswagen ID.4 has a very simplistic and no-fuss design language. There are no unnecessary cuts and creases but the flowing design looks futuristic and elegant. One of the biggest details on the face of the SUV has to be the new IQ.Light LED Matrix interactive headlamps. These are complemented by 3D LED tail lights at the rear as well. The simplicity of the design also lends the ID.4 a very efficient aerodynamic coefficient of just 0.28. The ID.4 is very simple in its profile as well but the large 21-inch wheels surely stand out and gives the car some character.
Stepping inside the cabin of the ID.4, you will notice the same philosophy in terms of design – minimalism with space and comfort. Like with every other modern car, the dashboard is adorned by two digital screens – one as the instrument cluster and the other as the infotainment display. There are absolutely no use of buttons with a stack of touch controls below the infotainment screen and on the steering wheel serving all your functions. There’s also a unique feature called the ID.Light, a light strip which runs below the dash and lights up in different colours to inform the driver about various features.

The Volkswagen ID.4 is powered by a 77 kWh battery and has a WLTP certified range of up to 520km. The battery powers a rear axle-mounted electric motor which produces 204 PS of power, sending power only to the rear wheels. There will also be an AWD variant of the ID.4 in the future. Volkswagen has however not revealed the torque output from the electric motor but the ID.4 has a top-speed of 160 kph and can sprint from 0-100 kph in a rather decent 8.5 seconds. Volkswagen says that the ID.4 is even capable of mild off-roading, thanks to its 210 mm of ground clearance.

Although there has been no official word from the brand yet, considering that the ID.Crozz concept was brought here at the Auto Expo 2020, we could look at a market launch of the ID.4 sometime in 2022. There were also reports about Skoda considering to bring the Enyaq IV to India. If it does make it here, it will surely sit above other electric compact SUVs like the MG ZS EV and Hyundai Kona Electric.
