Nissan Z Proto Concept Unveiled; Previews 370Z Successor!

Nissan has finally taken the wraps off the Z Proto Concept styled with retro design elements, but still very modern inside out. It will be powered by a twin-turbocharged V6 engine that’ll come mated to a manual gearbox. Yes, that’s right!

The Nissan 370Z has been a much loved entry-level sportscar but it was due a successor for a long time now. After numerous teasers and a lot of anticipation, Nissan has finally taken the wraps off the Z Proto. No, this is still not the production-spec car but its still a concept. The design is however almost production-ready and the production-spec car will likely be called the 400Z. The new Nissan Z Proto beautifully harks back to its root while now also being every bit modern. Let’s look at the car in a little more detail.

The design of the Nissan Z Proto is a clear nod to the original Z with its characteristic roofline that flows from the nose to the squared-off rear. The silhouette is unmistakably 370Z. The yellow pearlescent paint job is also inspired by the original Z while the black roof is inspired by the 300ZX. The teardrop shaped headlamps with two half circles for the LED DRLs is again inspired by the 240ZG. The rear design is perhaps the most striking with the rectangular black bar running across the width of the car. The horizontal LED tail lamps have been inspired by the 300ZX.

No, this is still not the production-spec car but its still a concept.

Some other notable design features include the carbon-fibre inserts on the side skirts, front lower lip and rear diffuser. The 19-inch alloy wheels and the dual-exhaust tips at the rear also give the car a lot of character. Step inside the car and the interiors are every bit modern. There’s nothing quite particularly striking about the interiors but its a relatively clean look with black upholstery and lots of yellow accents jazzing up the mood. The 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster however does catch your attention and then there’s the central infotainment screen as well.

The steering wheel has a plethora of controls and the deep-dish look also works really well. We also really like how the side AC vents have been integrated along with the door handles. Under the hood, the Nissan Z Proto is powered by a twin-turbocharged V6 engine and it comes paired to a, wait for it, a manual gearbox. That’s all Nissan has revealed as of now while we are still awaiting the numbers from Nissan. For reference, the previous 370Z produced  332PS in standard trim and 350PS in the Nismo trim. You can surely expect the numbers to be a step up from before.

The production-spec Nissan Z Proto will likely not ever make it to India.

We also hope that Nissan retains the rear-wheel drive configuration for the production-spec 400Z. The Nissan Z Proto is likely to debut in production-spec guise by next year. Back here in India, we haven’t have had a Nissan Z model since the previous 370Z was discontinued back in 2014. This new model will also not be on the cards for India. The productions-spec Nissan 400Z will rival the Toyota Supra when it hits production.
