The Toyota Urban Cruiser is essentially a badge-engineered Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza but this time, Toyota has showed more effort than they did with the Glanza-Baleno affair. Although the changes are only to the ‘soft’ plastic parts, it brings about a noticeable difference in the look of the car. And despite no sheet metal changes, the Urban Cruiser does a great job in looking like a mini Fortuner. The twin-slat grille with its angular chrome frame is clearly inspired by the Fortuner and so are the fog lamp housing on the lower bumper. The side are rear profile are largely identical to the Brezza.

On the inside, there are no changes in the design or the features offered. The Urban Cruiser however comes with a dual-tone dark brown finish to the upholstery compared to the Brezza’s grey and black layout. The top-spec Urban Cruiser gets features like LED fog lamps, 16-inch diamond-cut alloy wheels, a 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, an auto-dimming inside rear view mirror, cruise control, steering-mounted controls, keyless entry and go, automatic air-con and automatic wipers. The Urban Cruiser is however not offered in a bare-bones ‘base’ variant and even the entry-level Mid variant comes pretty well equipped indeed.

Under the hood, the Urban Cruiser is powered by the same engine as the Brezza. It thus gets the 1.5L, naturally aspirated, four-cylinder petrol engine that produces 104 PS and 138 Nm of peak torque. Gearbox options includes the same 5-speed MT and 4-speed torque converter automatic. The mild-hybrid system -featuring auto idle start-stop and torque boost – is offered only with the automatic variants on the Urban Cruiser, just like the Brezza. ARAI-rated fuel efficiency for manual variant of the Urban Cruiser stands at 17.03kpl, while the automatic variant posts a higher 18.76kpl.

Compared to its rivals in the compact SUV segment, the Urban Cruiser is neither the most expensive nor the most affordable.

Compared to its rivals in the compact SUV segment, the Urban Cruiser is neither the most expensive nor the most affordable, but it sits comfortable in between. Just like the Glanza, the Urban Cruiser is also has a lower ownership cost than the Vitara Brezza. Toyota will be offering a 3year/1,00,000km warranty, as opposed to the 2 year/40,000km on the Vitara Brezza.
