Toyota Innova fans, here’s something that will deepen your trust on your beloved MPV even more. Th 2020 Toyota Innova has been awarded a 5-star safety rating from the ASEAN NCAP crash test results. What’s the score for the Toyota Innova at the ASEAN NCAP?

The Innova Crysta has scored 33.05 points from a maximum of 36, for Adult Occupant Protection (AOP) in ASEAN NCAP’s crash tests. This gives it a weighted score of 45.90. For Child Occupant Protection (COP) tests, the MPV was awarded 21.51 points while it secured 15.28 points in terms of Safety Assist Technologies (SATs) that its equipped with. The Innova Crysta thus has a total score of 82.69 points.

To give you a reference, ASEAN NCAP recently also conducted crash tests on the 2020 Toyota Hilux and the India-bound Fortuner facelift, both of which also scored 5-star safety rating from ASEAN NCAP. Does this have anything to do with the India-spec Innova Crysta?

It’s worth pointing out that the Toyota Innova tested by ASEAN NCAP does not have any direct bearing on the Innova Crysta made and sold here in India. Yes, the India-spec Innova Crysta is mostly similar to the MPV sold in other ASEAN makrets but there are certain differences. For instance, in India, the Innova Crysta is powered by either a 166hp, 2.7-litre petrol or a 150hp, 2.4-litre diesel engine which is different from other markets. Moreover, the base-spec Innova Crysta GX variant comes with three airbags as standard in India, again different from other markets.

So what are the safety features offered on the ASEAN-spec Innova?

For starters, this is not the first time the second-gen Innova was crash tested by ASEAN NCAP. In a previous crash test conducted in 2016, the Innova secured a 4-star rating. At that time, it did not come equipped with ESC as standard and thus missed out on a 5-star rating. However, the 2020 Innova comes equipped with ABS, ESC and seatbelt reminders for the driver and front passengers as standard. While the Innova sold in Cambodia, Vietnam, Myanmar and Laos come with seven airbags as standard, the Indonesians-spec Innova gets seven airbags only on the higher-spec variants. Lower variants come with two airbags as standard.

Although not directly related to the India-spec Innova Crysta, a 5-star safety rating from ASEAN NCAP still instills peace in the minds of Innova Crysta users here in India as structurally, they are almost identical.
