SsangYong has teased a facelift for the Rexton in its home country and we have reasons to be excited about it because this could very well be the facelift that eventually makes it to the Mahindra Alturas G4.
Unknown to many, the South Korean carmaker SsangYong is actually owned by our home-grown carmaker Mahindra. In fact, the Mahindra Alturas G4 is actually a rebadged version of the SsangYong Rexton that’s sold is some international markets. SsangYong has now teased a facelift for the Rexton in its home country and we have reasons to be excited about it because this could very well be the facelift that eventually makes it to the Mahindra Alturas G4.
The pre-facelift SsangYong Rexton in South Korea essentially looks liken the India-spec Mahindra Alturas G4 and the design was starting to show its age. With this facelift however, SsangYong has given the SUV a complete makeover and it looks way more sophisticated and contemporary. The biggest highlight from the teaser has to be the new full-LED headlights with integrated DRLs which look brilliantly cool. The new grille is also massive, boasting a premium finish and the front and rear bumpers are bold and heavily sculpted, giving the SUV a very muscular stance.
The rear end of the SUV also looks much cleaner with sleeker LED tail lamps. Going by these exterior images, we expect the interiors too must have been completely redone. Speaking of the interiors, the refreshed Rexton will also boast of many new premium features and that includes advanced driver assistance systems such as autonomous braking, lane keep assist, adaptive cruise control and parallel park assist. We will have more details about the Rexton’s ADAS and autonomous tech once the SUV has been officially launched in South Korea.

We have already reported to you that the next-gen XUV500 is expected to feature some autonomous tech. The facelift for the Alturas G4 is expected to follow suit when it arrives. The MG Gloster is currently the most affordable vehicle in the Indian market to boast of such advanced features. Given the fact that the Alturas G4 sits in the same segment as the MG Gloster, Mahindra wouldn’t want to miss out on this opportunity to keep the Alturas G4 in contention.

Mahindra currently sells the Alturas G4 with a sole 180PS 2.2-litre diesel engine in India. Although the SsangYong Rexton gets a turbo-eptrol engine abroad, the Alturas G4 is expected to continue as a diesel-only SUV in India, even with its facelift. The lower-spec variants are available with a 4×2 drivetrain with the 4×4 drivetrain reserved for the top-spec variant only. The facelifted version of the full-size SUV will carry a premium over the current price range of Rs 28.72 lakh to Rs 31.72 lakh when it arrives, most likely by 2021.
