The Nanoli Speedway set to be built on the outskirts of Pune is nearly a 3km long race track and has been designed by Driven International with inputs from India’s former F1 driver, Karun Chandhok. It is expected to be completed by late-2021.
Although India still does not have a vibrant motorsports culture, we are certainly moving in the right direction. We say this because our country is set to have a brand-new racetrack by the name of Nanoli Speedway, which will be built in the outskirts of Pune. The development is still in its early stages but the circuit layout has already been approved by the FMSCI and the FIA. This racetrack has been designed by UK-based race track designers Driven International along with inputs from India’s former F1 racing driver Karun Chandhok.
The track layout has already been finalized and the interesting thing about this track is that it will host multiple configurations. The full circuit is expected to be 2.928km long and features 12 turns along with two long straights. The second configuration is known as the “Speed Circuit” and is 2.788km long with 14 turns. Further, the track has been also been divided into shorter ‘West’ and ‘East’ configuration with seven and eight turns respectively. The organizers says that it has been optimized for vehicle testing.
The track has already been put in simulation and a simulated lap in a Jaguar F-Type gives a lap time of 1min 21.6 seconds with an average speed of 123 kph. The run-off areas will be a mix of asphalt as well as grass. The track will also be used to host track days and racing events for the Nanoli Country Club members. Apart from three different configurations of the track, there are also plans to build a 4×4 off-road center in the same facility. It could feature a range of terrain and man-made obstacles for some hard core offroading adventure.

The usual pit buildings, paddock and VIP lounge are obviously part of the plan as well. The organizers are even aiming to build a karting track and a skid pad in the same facility. With approval from the Federation of Motor Sports Clubs of India (FMSCI) and the FIA, motorsport’s international governing body, the organizers are aiming to complete the racetrack by late-2021. It is currently FIA Grade 3 approved, but it will only be eligible for an FIA license one the track has been completely finished and detailed assessment has been carried out.

Currently, India boasts of three operational racetracks – the Buddh International Circuit (BIC), the Madras Motor Racing Track (MMRT) and the Kari Motor Speedway in Coimbatore. Of these, the BIC is an F1-spec state-of-the-art racetrack and although it had the privilege of hosting a Formula 1 Grand Prix from 2011 to 2013, it is mostly used for private track days, product launch events and customer events for car and bike manufacturers these days, just like the other two circuits. It also hosts a few local championships as well. With the Nanoli Speedway coming, we will have a more even distribution of race tracks across the country and it will also be a huge boost to motorsports.
