2020 Mahindra Thar Secures 4-Star Safety Rating at Global NCAP!

The 2020 Mahindra Thar has scored four out of five stars in both Adult Occupant Protection (AOP) and Child Occupant Protection (COP). The hard-top LX variant was crash tested at a speed of 64kmph and the body shell integrity remained stable under impact.

The Global NCAP has tested yet another made-in-India car and this time, its the all-new Mahindra Thar. We are very glad to report that the 2020 Mahindra Thar has secured quite a good four out of five star safety rating. That’s not only a huge improvement over its predecessor that didn’t come with any safety features at all, but its also good to see that Mahindra is taking safety quite seriously. The XUV300 already has a 5-star safety rating from Global NCAP and now with the Thar securing a 4-star safety rating, Mahindra will surely earn a secured place in the hearts of its customers.

We are very glad to report that the 2020 Mahindra Thar has secured quite a good four out of five star safety rating at Global NCAP crash tests.

The Mahindra Thar has scored four out of five stars in both Adult Occupant Protection (AOP) and Child Occupant Protection (COP). In fact, the Thar has scored the highest score yet in Child Occupant Protection (COP) among any made-in-India cars that has been tested by Global NCAP under its #SaferCarsForIndia campaign. Like all Global NCAP tests, the crash test was conducted at a speed of 64kmph. However, Global NCAP usually tests the base variant of every car but in case of the Mahindra Thar, it was the top-spec hard-top LX variant that was crash tested.

Global NCAP states that the body shell integrity of the Thar remained stable under impact at 64kmph and was capable of withstanding further loads. However, the footwell area was rated as unstable. As for adult occupant protection, the Thar scored 12.52 points out of 17 available. Head and neck protection for both the driver and the passenger were rated as good. Chest protection for the driver was rated as adequate while it was rated as good for the passenger. Knee protection for the driver was however only marginal as it could be impacted by elements behind the dashboard. Knee protection for the passenger was however rated marginal and good.

For child protection, the Thar scored 41.11 points out of 49 available. Head movement for the child dummy seated on the forward facing rear seat was restricted. Even the 18-month old child dummy seater on a rear-facing child seat was provided with full protection. The presence of ISOFIX anchor points and three-point seating belts for all the passengers in the Thar with the forward facing rear seats also greatly helped the score. In terms of safety features, the Thar gets dual airbags, ABS with EBD, a roll cage, rear parking sensors, and electronic stability control.

Global NCAP also subjected the Thar to a side impact crash test, which the SUV took in its stride. A side impact test is mandatory for a car to secure a 5-star rating. It however did not contribute to the overall final score of the Thar as it didn’t score enough in the frontal offset crash test to be close to securing a five-star rating. Global NCAP also tested the Thar’s Electronic Stability Programme (ESP). In its test of the ESP (offered only on the top-spec LX trim), Global NCAP noted that the Thar exhibited ‘unstable dynamic behavior’ and that a review and improvement of the Thar’s ESP are needed. This still should be a great boost for the Mahindra Thar. Record books are filling up fast and the Thar currently has a waiting period of up to seven months. The Global NCAP score will further solidify customer’s trust on the new Thar.
