Here we are comparing the Hyundai i20 vs Venue to see which is faster and more fuel efficient with the 1.0L turbo-petrol engine along with their 7-speed DCT gearboxes. Read on to find out who comes out on top.
It is Hyundai and Volkswagen along with a few other manufacturers who are leading the turbo-petrol engine revolution in India. Hyundai’s 1.0L turbo-petrol engine has almost become a staple in all of its compact cars. It debuted on the Venue and then it was offered on the Aura, the Grand i10 Nios, the new Verna and most recently, the new third-gen i20. Hyundai offers this engine in two specs of tune – 100PS/172Nm and 120PS/172Nm (depending on the model) – and with three different gearbox options – a 6-speed manual, the 7-speed DCT and the 6-speed iMT gearbox. Here we are comparing the Hyundai i20 vs Venue to see which is faster and more fuel efficient with the 1.0L turbo-petrol engine.
For a fair comparison, we are comparing the DCT gearbox equipped variants of both the models. In fact, the engine feels the best when mated to the 7-speed DCT gearbox as it known for its quick and smooth shifts. Also, prices for the i20 turbo-petrol variant with the DCT gearbox actually overlaps the prices of the Venue with a similar configuration. This test was conducted by Zigwheels where they have compared the acceleration and fuel efficiency of the 1.0L turbo-petrol engine in two different cars – a hatchback vs sub-compact SUV.
Acceleration – Hyundai i20 vs Venue
Hyundai i20 | Hyundai Venue (BS4)
0-100kmph | 10.88 seconds | 11.24 seconds |
20-80kmph (Kickdown) | 6.83 seconds | 6.72 seconds |
In the sprint from naught to 100kmph, the Hyundai i20 is actually faster than the Venue by 0.4 seconds. That frankly does not come as a surprise as the i20 is a lighter car than the Venue and that would definitely help in the sprint up to 100kmph. However, in kickdown acceleration from 20-80kmph, it is the Venue that is faster than the i20 but by only a very small margin. In the real world, there will barely be any differences felt in between these two cars.

Mileage – Hyundai i20 vs Venue
Hyundai i20 | Hyundai Venue (BS4)
City | 12.06kmpl | 10.25kmpl |
Highway | 17.18kmpl | 16.72kmpl |
The differences in fuel efficiency between the two cars is a little more prominent than their performance figures. In the city, the new i20 returns almost a whole 2kmpl more than the Venue. Out on the highway however, the gap between the two cars reduce to just 0.4kmpl, but here again it is the i20 that has the lead. Its again down the i20 being lighter and of course, being a hatchback, the i20 has lesser rolling resistance than the Venue.

Prices – Hyundai i20 vs Venue
Hyundai i20 Turbo DCT | Hyundai Venue Turbo DCT
Prices (ex-showroom) | Rs 10.67 lakh to Rs 11.33 lakh | Rs 9.67 lakh to Rs 11.65 lakh |
This is where it really gets interesting. The i20 actually has a higher starting price for its turbo DCT variant than the Venue by an entire Rs 1 lakh. On the other side of the spectrum the Venue is only Rs 32,000 more expensive than the i20 for its top-end trim. On paper, the i20 has the clear advantage, both in terms of performance and fuel efficiency. But choosing between a hatchback or a sub-compact SUV comes down to personal preference. Both have their advantages and their disadvantages and it ultimately depends on which has more practicality and value for you.
