Hyundai Kona EV Facelift Revealed; India-Bound in 2021!

Hyundai has updated the Kona EV globally with a more sophisticated and mature design along with more features on the inside. The range has also been slightly improved and it is expected to come to India in 2021.

It’s been about a year and half since Hyundai launched the Kona EV in India but it has been on sale in international markets for a little while longer. And now, Hyundai has already revealed a facelift for the Kona EV globally, just two years after its introduction. Now the standard Hyundai Kona with internal combustion and hybrid engines were too updated some time back and now, the same design and features updates have made it to the Kona EV. Yes, the facelift will be coming to India, so let’s take a closer look at it.

With the current Kona EV that’s on sale in India, the design is a mix and match of a lot of elements, and admittedly it does not all come together very well. This new Hyundai Kona EV looks a lot more sophisticated, cleaner and complete with its design approach. The headlights have been slightly revised and the bumper is a little more sleeker than before. There’s also a lot less cladding on the sides, making it look a lot cleaner. The closed grille also looks much better than before with the Hyundai logo now sitting flush with the body work. At the rear, the tail lamps are completely revised.

Just like the regular Kona grew in length with its facelift, the Kona EV too has grown by 40mm that its predecessor. Hyundai is also offering 9 new color options on the Kona EV, taking the total count up to 16, including two dual-tone options too. There’s aren’t many design changes on the inside as there are on the outside, but the sizes of the screens sure have gone up. Now there’s a standard 10.25-inch digital driver’s display along with an optional 10.25-inch floating touchscreen infotainment system, which gets connected car tech and Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.

The Kona EV also get a new ambient lighting system on the inside along with two new interior colour packages: black and dual-tone grey. On the features front, the Kona EV now additionally gets a blind-spot collision-avoidance assist, leading vehicle departure alert, rear seat alert, and safe exit warning. Although Hyundai offers the Kona EV with two different battery packs in markets abroad, here in India, we only get the entry-spec tune with a 39.2kWh battery. The electric motor develops 136PS and 395Nm. Hyundai claims the Kona EV can sprint from 0-100kph in just 9.9 seconds.

The Kona EV has a top-speed of 155kph and the facelifted version has a claimed WLTP range of 305 km on a full charge. That by the way is 5km more than its predecessor, thanks to updated tires. A 100kW DC fast charger will top up the batteries from 10% to 80% in about 47 minutes while a 7.2kW charger would take 6 hours to charge from 10 to 100%. The Kona EV facelift is expected to make it to India sometime in 2021. Currently, this EV retails in India from Rs 23.75 lakh to Rs 23.94 lakh (ex-showroom). Currently, it is only the MG ZS EV that rivals the Hyundai Kona EV in India.
