Nissan recently revealed the prices of Magnite and they are quite aggressive to say the very least. So much so that it is almost obligatory to compare it with the cars of similar price point rather than a similar segment. Starting from Rs. 4,99,000 and going up to Rs. 9,35,000, the Magnite promises to shake up the under Rs. 10 lakh segment. Volkswagen Polo’s prices on the other hand lie between Rs 5,87,5000 and Rs 9,67,000. This huge overlap in price has inspired this comparison. So, let’s get into it.

Nissan Magnite is powered by 3-Cylinder 1L Petrol and a bit more powerful Turbo-Petrol Engines making 71 bhp/96 Nm and 99 bhp/160 Nm respectively. Now, Magnite having a Kerb weight of a mere 1039 kg is able to draw a lot of performance from these engines. Although the steering is a bit inert, the turbo-powered engine is decent enough to put you back in your seat once the turbo kicks in. Magnite offers a decent ride and handling experience, especially around the corners. The stiff suspension translates to high-speed stability.
Volkswagen Polo, in contrast, has always been an exquisite handler. The driving dynamics of the car, be it the steering or the suspension, is sure to put a smile on the one behind the steering wheel. Magnite gives a rather impressive 20 kmpl mileage with its 1L Turbo-Petrol and a healthy 18.75 kmpl with the naturally aspirated engine. The figure falls slightly at 17.70 kmpl mileage with CVT Automatic. A lot of people could potentially make this a deciding factor. This will definitely be a strong point in Magnite’s favor. Polo, on the other hand, returns 17.75 kmpl with the manual and a decent 18.24kmpl with the automatic. Ensuring an engaging driving experience and dynamics does take its toll on the mileage. However, as a driving enthusiast, that is a trade-off that one is willing to make in a heartbeat.

Magnite being a sub-compact SUV is a bit longer, wider, and higher than the Polo. But that translates to Polo being easier to manoeuvre especially in and around the chaos of city traffic. Polo being a hatchback will also have more stability at high speeds because it will remain more planted to the surface. On the other hand, the practicality aspect is better in Magnite. This is demonstrated with a large boot and longer wheelbase. As a result, it translates to more legroom and headroom at the rear. So, if you want a car which you will be using in city most of the time, go for Polo. But if you want to go out of town regularly or plan frequent weekend trips, go for the practical Magnite.
Nissan officially calls Magnite: Bold and Beautiful and that is precisely what Magnite’s exteriors are. You just can’t miss the large chrome grille at the front along with the sleek and stylish First-in-segment Bi-Projector LED Headlamps with LED turn indicators. The L-shaped LED DRLs with LED fog lamps also accentuate the edges of the bumper. The aggressive wheel arches and a 205 mm ground clearance gives it a rather sporty stance. The side profile really stands out, thanks to a chrome beltline running around the windows as well as a quarter-glass at the rear to provide a sense of roominess in the cabin. The wide-split tail lamps make it look wider than it actually is. All-in-all, bold design choice is what Nissan has gone for here and we are not complaining. It certainly looks sporty and bold, especially with those silver skid plates.
Volkswagen Polo on the other has carried on with its traditional contemporary and sophisticated design language. It is one of those designs which never go out of fashion. Add to that the solid built quality and you will understand why Volkswagen doesn’t change their design language too much. It has been their formula for success for decades now. Why fix something, that isn’t broken!
We do like the modern and fresh styling on the Magnite, though looks are subjective.

Being the latest launch, Magnite is filled to the brim with all the techs and features. The interiors of the Magnite are certainly driver-oriented with the centre console tilt 5 degrees towards the driver. There are a 7-inch digital instrument cluster and an 8-inch digital infotainment display with Wireless connectivity with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Steering mounted controls and cruise control helps in enhancing accessibility and convenience. As optional features, one can update to Wireless charging, JBL Audio System and Nissan Connected Car Tech. On the safety front, there is a 360-degree surround-view camera, hill-start assist, traction control, vehicle dynamic control, ISOFIX child seat mounts, tyre pressure monitoring system, ABS and dual Airbags.
Volkswagen Polo also comes loaded with features like Digital Infotainment System with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Steering mounted controls, Bluetooth connectivity, cruise control. Safety features include ABS, Dual airbags, vehicle stability control system, ISOFIX child seat mounts but it does miss out on 360-degree camera, Hill-start assist and traction control. So, although it is not a brand new car, Volkswagen has kept its Polo up-to-date. But still, it misses out on some of the latest features like Wireless Charging, Digital Instrument Cluster, Rear AC vents, Rear armrest with cup holders and phone holder.

Which one to pick?
Well, you can’t really go wrong with any of these two because each of them has something unique to offer. If we talk about the driving experience, the legendary TSI Engines of Volkswagen don’t need any introduction. It has been VW’s most successful engine ever. The refinement levels of this compact engine are simply phenomenal. The overall experience with steering feel and driving dynamics of Polo makes it an ideal driver’s car. In case you are someone who loves driving, Polo is the one for you.
Magnite in contrast is the new kid on the block. It has recently been launched and the engine is also fresh and new. Being a sub 4m SUV however, does make it a bit more practical with more space all around. Having been launched recently, it does come equipped with the latest tech and features. If you are looking for a car that can take you out on an occasional weekend off-road trip with a larger boot, spacious interiors, and better rear seat comfort, along with a striking bold look and road presence, Magnite will be our choice.
