Kiger To Carry Renault’s Strategy Forward – Launch In 2021!

Renault must be credited with popularizing the mid-size SUV segment in India. It first launched its mid-size SUV, the Duster back in 2012 and enjoyed huge success with it. The popularity can be assessed by the fact that the Duster is still on sale today. Although the competition has grown substantially since, then with the introduction of Creta and Seltos, Duster still holds its ground. Now the race has shifted to a segment below, the compact SUV or sub-4-m SUV. Renault already has an MPV in that segment, which is successful in the Indian market.

Now it wants to take the game to the competitors by introducing another product in that segment, the Kiger. Kiger is a subcompact SUV that will be placed under the Duster. Let us look in detail what the Kiger will offer.

Renault Kiger – Exterior

Based on the CMFA plus platform, the Kiger will be similar in size to the Triber and its Nissan sibling, the Magnite. Showcased as a concept earlier this year, Renault has confirmed that the production-spec model will retain around 80% of the exterior. The exterior showcases a modern headlamp positioning, with the LED DRLs on the bonnet and the headlamp cluster down on the bumper. The overall stance makes the Kiger look very sporty.

Renault Kiger Front 2021

This will appeal a lot to the urban buyers as well as to semi-urban buyers looking for an SUV with high ground clearance. The ground clearance will most likely be 210 mm.

Although not much has been revealed in regards to the interior of the Kiger, it is expected to come with a Full-Digital Infotainment Touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. There will most likely be features like Cruise Control, Steering Mounted Controls, Voice Command, Digital Instrument Cluster and a Sunroof.

Renault Kiger – Engine and Transmission

Renault Kiger will most likely come with a 1.0-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine, which will make 71 hp and 96 Nm. There can also be 1.0-turbo petrol on offer making 99 hp and 160 Nm. The naturally aspirated unit could come with either a manual or an AMT. The turbo unit could be paired with either a manual or a CVT, just like the Magnite.

Renault Kiger – Prices and Competition

Renault is counting on its appeal to the semi-urban and urban market after the success of Triber. That is the reason it has a strong build Duster already in its lineup. The new Kiger will carry that design language of a strong and sporty compact SUV forward. The high ground clearance will ensure usage in a semi-urban environment. The flashy exterior will ensure Kiger’s market among the younger generation with a lot of conveniences and modern features.

Renault will price the Kiger very competitively, although a bit higher than the Nissan Magnite. Considering, the Magnite ranges from Rs 4.99 lakh to Rs 9.45 lakh, Kiger will be marginally higher than that. However, it is important to note that even still, the prices will undercut the likes of Venue, XUV300, Nexon and Brezza. If the buyers opt for the already popular compact SUVs or the new entry to the market with Kiger, we will soon find out. Renault is expected to launch the Kiger in 2021.
