The second-largest car manufacturer in India, Hyundai is planning to bring a mini SUV to India. The product in question here is the car codenamed Hyundai AX. Already competing fiercely against Maruti Suzuki in almost every segment, Hyundai wants to expand the market share in the lower segments also. Hence, the decision to include an even smaller SUV than the Venue in its fleet makes a lot of sense. There have been spy shots of Hyundai AX floating around and we would like to report what are the details of this micro SUV and when can we expect it in our market.

Hyundai AX – Exterior
From the outside, it follows the typical tall-boy stance that we have seen a number of times from Hyundai. Essentially, AX will be based on the new platform on which the Santro is also based. Therefore, we expect those kinds of dimensions as well, which will be smaller than the Venue. The grille up front looks huge, which is in line with the latest design language from Hyundai. The LED DRLs are seen place up on the bonnet and the main headlamp cluster down on the bumper. This is a modern design choice that many carmakers follow these days. There are alloy wheels visible in the image as well. The wheel arches look very pronounced, especially at the rear. The overall design looks like a miniature version of the Venue. This is only a good thing, considering the Venue is one of the highest-selling SUVs in the compact SUV segment in recent times and continues to sell strong.

There are currently no updates regarding the interior design of the Hyundai AX but we expect high quality and modern interiors with a ton of convenience features, just like on all the other products from Hyundai. This has always been Hyundai’s strength and it will back itself upon this.
Hyundai AX – Expected Engine, Price and Rivals
Being a segment lower than the Venue, we expect the Hyundai AX to come with the same engine as the Santro. This is a 1.1-litre engine that produces 68hhp and 99Nm. It can come with either a 5-speed manual or an AMT gearbox option to keep the costs in check. We expect it to be priced around 4-7 lakh range. This makes it a direct competitor to the Maruti Suzuki S-Presso, Renault Kwid and the upcoming Tata Hornbill.

This is a relatively new segment, but we already see some players entering it with brand new products. This makes the Indian automobile industry extremely diverse and gives the customers a wide variety to choose from in every segment.
