Executive Sedan Sales Comparison For February – City, Verna, Ciaz, Yaris, Rapid And Vento!

As usual, we bring you to the comparison of growth in sales in the executive sedan segment for the month of February 2021. The executive sedan segment has shown some positive growth over the last few months. Initially, it was thought that the compact SUV segment will completely eat up the executive sedan segment but somehow, the latter has managed to stay afloat and grow. As a matter of fact, the executive sedan segment grew by 30% YoY in the month of February 2021. Whereas this segment saw sales of a little over 5,700 units in the same month last year, the sales were over 7,500 units this year. Let us take a look at the individual products contributing to this growth.

Executive Sedans

Honda City – 101% Growth

The most popular executive sedan in the country has seen its sales doubling from what they were a year ago. Honda sold over 2,500 units in February 2021, compared to a little over 1,200 units in the same month last year. This indicates a growth of over 100% on a YoY basis. The increasing popularity of the already successful product from Honda can be attributed to the fact that, currently, Honda is offering both Citys, i.e., fourth and fifth-generation making the sedan accessible to a wide range of customers.

Hyundai Verna – 259% Growth

The other popular offering from the second-largest auto manufacturer in the country has also seen some remarkable increase in its sales compared to the year before. Hyundai sold a mere 570 units of its executive sedan, Verna in February 2020, compared to a massive over 2,000 units in February 2021. Verna has always been a popular product from Hyundai because of its feature-packed offering and multiple and powerful engine-transmission combos on offer.

Maruti Suzuki Ciaz – 41% Degrowth

The big trio of the most popular executive sedans in the country is completed by the Maruti Suzuki Ciaz, which sold over1,500 units in February 2021 in comparison to over 2,500 units back in February 2020. This marks degrowth of 41% for the largest carmaker in the country. This could well be the result of a lack of diesel option with Ciaz and no updates/facelifts to the existing model for quite some time now. The competitors are refreshing the styling of their products frequently which helps keep the sedan fresh and desirable.

Toyota Yaris – 21% Growth

The not-so-successful sedan from Toyota, the Yaris, also observed a minor 21% growth in sales YoY. Compared to February 2020, where it sold 542 units, Toyota sold 657 units of the Yaris this February. The competition seems to be too strong for Yaris in India ever since its launch, which is the reason why the sales never saw much success.

Skoda Rapid – 10% Degrowth

The Czech carmaker is betting big in our market this year with quite a few launches planned, starting with the mid-size Creta-rival SUV, the Kushaq. Kushaq will make its debut on March 18. The sedan from Skoda will also probably see a makeover real soon thereafter. Skoda sold 680 units of the Rapid in February last year, compared to 614 units this year. It will be interesting to see if it manages to shake up the segment and bring a fight to its rivals with the all-new Rapid.

VW Vento – 30% Growth

The German carmaker is also planning to come all guns blazing this year, in a bid to increase its market share substantially. Volkswagen has decided to launch a few India-specific products this year on the MQB A0 IN platform, designed especially for our market. The all-new Vento is also on the cards and will be launched after the Taigun SUV from the carmaker. In February 2020, VW sold just 143 units of the Vento in comparison to 186 units in the same month this year. This, clearly, is not what VW would want and plans to change this by bringing in the new Vento this year.
