VW Taigun vs Kia Seltos – Engines, Safety, Features And Expected Prices Comparison!

VW Taigun is the latest entry into the much-popular mid-size SUV segment in India. The segment leader includes Hyundai Creta and Kia Seltos. We have already covered the Taigun vs Creta comparison which might be helpful for those of you who are planning to buy either of the two. The Seltos is the Korean sibling of the Creta and shares the platform with it as well but the interiors and feature-list on the Seltos is quite extensive. It will be interesting to see what comes out of this comparison of these two SUVs. Taigun is set to launch by mid-2021 and then we will know about the exact price of the German SUV. until then, however, let us compare these two on various other fronts and try to deduce which one might suit you better.

VW Taigun vs Kia Seltos – Exterior and Dimensions

On the outside, the Taigun is very much in line with the latest VW products globally. The front is a bold look with LED Headlamps with DRLs. The front also looks kind of shiny with chrome on the front grille. The flat bonnet will allow for good visibility. The front bumpers are designed to give the SUV a sporty look. The alloys are also typical Volkswagen, in that, VW uses this alloys design on all of their international SUVs. The sides are accentuated by 17-inch alloy wheels, sharp creases and a boxy stance. The rear looks very modern with continuous LED tail lamps by a blacked-out glass bar that runs across the width of the car and there is a chrome bar on the rear bumper as well. This is in line with the design language that one can find in the European versions of T-Roc and T-Cross. The wheelbase is 2651mm which will be the largest in the segment, which translates into plenty of rear cabin space for the passengers.

VW Taigun

The Kia Seltos is a muscular bold and modern SUV that is warmly welcomed by the customers after its arrival. Having already known the Indian sensibilities, Kia made sure that the exterior appearance of the Seltos does make it look blingy and grand. Therefore, the front facia features the LED headlamps along with LED strip and LED DRLs, that run across the width of the car on the nose, a large signature Tiger Nose grille with chrome outlines, vertical LED fog lamps on the bumper and skid plates. On the sides, the 17-inch Crystal Cut Alloys with red brake calipers and floating roof rails make the car look sporty. On the rear, the most striking features include a chrome bar that connects the two LED heartbeat Tail lamps, Rear Spoiler, Shark Fin Antenna and much more.

In terms of the dimensions, Kia Seltos has a clear edge over the Taigun but the difference is not too much. On the other hand, Taigun boasts of having the largest wheelbase in the segment, thanks to its MQB A0 IN platform, specifically developed for our market. This translates to a ton of rear legroom and comfort. However, that comes at a slight cost of boot space.

The VW Taigun comes with the legendary 1.0-litre TSI turbo petrol engine, making 115 PS and 175 Nm and its bigger sibling, the 1.5-litre TSI turbo petrol unit making 150 PS and 250 Nm. Complementing the 1.0-litre engine will be a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic transmission. The larger 1.5-litre unit will come mated to either a 6-speed manual or a 7-speed DSG (DCT) gearbox. Because of heavy localization, we expect the Taigun to be priced around the Rs 10 lakh to Rs 18 lakh price bracket.

The Kia Seltos comes with a multitude of engine-gearbox combinations including a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol making 115 PS and 144 Nm, a 1.5-litre diesel making 115 PS and 250 Nm and a 1.4-litre Turbo petrol with direct injection making 140 PS and 242 Nm. These engines can be had with either a 6-speed manual, 6-speed automatic, 7-speed DCT or a CVT transmission options. The Kia Seltos costs between Rs 9.89 lakh and Rs 17.45 lakh, ex-showroom.

VW Taigun vs Kia Seltos – Verdict

Now, it is not easy to choose one of these two amazingly capable SUVs. Let us, therefore, break this down to the requirements that one might have from his/her SUVs. If you are looking for a good-old diesel-powered SUV, then there is really one option for you. However, if you are up-to-date with the latest trend, then you must be in search of a strong turbo petrol engine. Here is where the game gets really interesting. Both these SUVs have that option but if you are someone who loves to drive and is looking for a driver-focused product, then you can opt for the German Taigun. However, if you are someone who will probably buy an SUV solely for the practicality and convenience of it, then you will better off with the Kia Seltos.
