In this edition of comparisons, we will feature the newcomer into the segment, the Volkswagen Taigun and the popular SUV from MG, the Hector. Now, both of these lie in the mid-size SUV segment in India, which is witnessing more and more players entering. It makes complete sense considering how popular and lucrative this segment is. Only a handful of OEMs are currently operational in the segment which creates an opportunity for new players. But it must be noted that the new products have to be very well equipped and competitively priced in order to dethrone the likes of Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos and MG Hector from the podium. With heavy localization, that is exactly what VW and Skoda are trying to achieve. Whether they will be able to dent the growth of their rivals once they launch, only time will tell. VW Taigun vs MG Hector – Exteriors and Dimensions
The exteriors of the Taigun are very much in line with the latest VW products globally. The front is a bold look with LED Headlamps with DRLs. The front also looks kind of shiny with chrome on the front grille. The flat bonnet will allow for good visibility. The front bumpers are designed to give the SUV a sporty look. The alloys are also typical Volkswagen, in that, VW uses this alloys design on all of their international SUVs. The sides are accentuated by 17-inch alloy wheels, sharp creases and a boxy stance. The rear looks very modern with continuous LED tail lamps by a blacked-out glass bar that runs across the width of the car and there is a chrome bar on the rear bumper as well. This is in line with the design language that one can find in the European versions of T-Roc and T-Cross. The wheelbase is 2651mm which will be the largest in the segment, which translates into plenty of rear cabin space for the passengers.

The MG Hector is an entirely different kind of SUV compared to the rivals in terms of exterior dimnesions. It is a long, tall and sophisticated SUV. there are LED Haedalmpas with LED DRLs, LED fog lamps, bold chrome touched front grille, gunmetal front skid plates, the headlamp unit placed at the lower end of the bumper and the DRLs on the top of the bonnet, 18-inch dual-tone alloys, floating-effect turn indicators, sleek rear LED tail lamps with chrome bar connecting the rear tail lamps. Overall, the design language is very modern and is a head-turner.

There is no comparison between the two in terms of exterior dimensions whatsoever. The Hector takes the cake by a huge margin by being the longest, tallest and widest SUV in the segment with the largest wheelbase and a massive luggage compartment. The practicality aspect of the SUV is maximized to the limit in the Hector and if it that what you are looking for, don’t read any further.

VW Taigun vs MG Hector – Interior and Features
The interior of the Taigun looks modern and premium and have features like a 10-inch latest Digital Infotainment System with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Digital Virtual Cockpit Style Instrument Cluster with a customizable display, Automatic Climate Control, Leather Upholstery, Ventilated Front Seats, Type C USB charging port, My Volkswagen Connect Connected Tech, Ventilated Leather Front Seats, Ambient Lighting, Flat-bottom Steering Wheel with Audio Controls and Voice Recognition, Electric Sunroof and much more. The rear cabin space is huge because of the large wheelbase.
The MG Hector comes with a ton of convenience and modern connected technology. The interior includes a new dual-tone theme, which MG likes to call Champagne and Black theme. VW Taigun vs MG Hector – Safety
On the safety front, the Taigun comes with features like 6 Airbags, ABS with EBD, Electronic Stability Control, Tyre Pressure Deflation Warning, Rear Parking Distance Control, Hill Hold Control, 3-head Restraints at the rear, Child Seat Mounts, 3-point Seatbelts for the third passenger at the rear too and much more.
The MG Hector is also filled with safety tech upto the brim. This includes 6 Airbags, ABS with EBD and Brake Assist, Front and rear Parking Sensors with 360-degree view Camera, All-four Disc Brakes, Hill Hold Function, Electronic Parking Brake, Tyre Pressure Monitoring System, ESP, ISOFIX Child Seat Mounts, and more. The MG Hector has a couple of more safety features as is clear from the list above but the Taigun has all the necessary safety kit too.

VW Taigun vs MG Hector – Engines and Expected Prices
The VW Taigun comes with the legendary 1.0-litre TSI turbo petrol engine, making 115 PS and 175 Nm and its bigger sibling, the 1.5-litre TSI turbo petrol unit making 150 PS and 250 Nm. Complementing the 1.0-litre engine will be a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic transmission. The larger 1.5-litre unit will come mated to either a 6-speed manual or a 7-speed DSG (DCT) gearbox. Because of heavy localization, we expect the Taigun to be priced around the Rs 10 lakh to Rs 18 lakh price bracket.
The MG Hector offers a 1.5-litre turbo petrol and 1.5-litre turbo petrol engine with mild-hybrid technology. Both these engines make 143PS and 250Nm and can be mated to either a manual or a DCT automatic gearbox. The 2.0-litre diesel engine makes 170hp and 350Nm and comes with a 6-speed manual transmission option only. Recently, MG also launched the Hector with a CVT transmission. The prices of the MG Hector range between Rs 12.89 lakh and Rs 18.42 lakh, ex-showroom.

VW Taigun vs MG Hector – Verdict
Choosing between these two brilliant SUVs is no mean task. Each of these has its own strengths and weaknesses but overall you won’t miss anything too much if you go for either of the two. If you are someone who loves to drive and will spend a lot of time behind the steering wheel, you will most likely enjoy the driving dynamism and characteristics of the German SUV, the VW Taigun. However, if you will be chauffeur driven and want to enjoy the in-cabin conveniences and comforts with a ton of cabin and boot space, then you will be better off in the MG Hector.
