We are back with the car sales report for the month of April 2021. Unlike other months, however, we can’t represent a year-on-year growth trajectory since the country was in complete lockdown in April 2020 and not a single car was sold. Hence, we would get a better understanding of the Indian car market by comparing the sales to the month before. Also, it must be mentioned that the pandemic situation in the country is worsening day by day and that has affected the automobile industry severely along with the overall economy of the country. Therefore, almost all the OEMs have seen a decline in sales on a month-on-month basis. Every sector is reeling under the terrible effects of the rise in Covid cases at the moment. Nonetheless, let us look at how the carmakers performed in the month of April 2021.

Maruti Suzuki – > 1.35 lakh units
The largest car manufacturer in the country has seen a decline in sales of around 7% compared to March 2021. In March, Maruti Suzuki sold over 1.46 lakh units in the country, whereas, in April 2021, it sold just over 1.35 lakh units. It has shut down its manufacturing plant and the manufacturing facility will now produce oxygen to aid the ongoing efforts to provide oxygen to the health sector to tackle the pandemic. This is a wonderful initiative from the carmakers and is appreciated.

Hyundai – > 49,000 Units
The second-largest carmaker in the country has also seen around a 6.8% decline in sales compared to the month prior. In April of this year, Hyundai managed to sell just over 49,000 units in the country compared to just over 52,000 in March 2021. Hyundai has also planned to launch the 7-seater Alcazar derived from Creta but has postponed the launch due to the current situation in the country.

Tata Motors – > 25,000 Units
The homegrown carmaker has cemented its spot as the third-largest manufacturer in the country by selling over 25,000 units in the month of April. The number, however, was much higher in March with over 29,000 sales marking a decline in sales of around 15%, which is substantial.

Mahindra and Mahindra – > 18,000 Units
The other big homegrown car manufacturer is one of the only two OEMs that have seen positive growth in the month of April 2021. Mahindra grew by over 9% with over 18,000 units being sold in April compared to just over 16,000 units in March 2021. There are a ton of products from Mahindra that are slated to launch soon but the shortage of semiconductors and the current worsening situation due to the pandemic has seen the launch being pushed back.
Kia India – > 16,000 Units
The popular Kia has seen a 15% decline in sales for the month of April 2021, compared to the month before that. In April, Kia sold over 16,000 units in our market compared to over 19,000 in March. Kia has updated the Seltos and Sonet and tweaked the prices as well and introduced the new brand logo.

Toyota – > 9,500 Units
Toyota has marked a massive 35% decline in sales in April compared to March 2021. In March 2021, the Japanese carmaker sold over 15,000 units in our market, whereas, in April, Toyota managed to sell only around 9,500 units. The Maruti Suzuki-sourced products continue to be a major contributor to the overall sales of the brand.
Honda – > 9,000 Units
The other brand to mark a positive growth trajectory in April 2021 is Honda with a substantial 27% jump in sales on a month-on-month basis. In March of this year, Honda was at around 7,000 unit month sales. In April 2021, this number jumped to over 9,000 sales. The chief sales drivers for the brand are Amaze and City.

Renault – > 8,500 Units
The French carmaker has seen a decline in sales of about 30% which is really huge. In March, Renault sold over 12,000 units in India compared to only around 8,500 units in April 2021. The compact SUV, Kiger, micro-SUV, Kwid and the MPV, Triber are the volume drivers for the brand.
Ford – > 5,000 Units
Ford has marked a 29% decrease in sales in April compared to the month before. In April of this year, Ford saw over 5,000 units being sold in our market compared to over 7,700 units in March 2021. The introduction of the updated EcoSport has contributed to the overall sales in April.

Nissan – > 3,300 Units
Nissan sold just over 3,300 units in India in April 2021, compared to over 4,000 units in March. The sole chief contributor to these sales figures is the budget-friendly compact SUV in the form of Magnite which was launched at the end of last year.
MG – > 2,500 Units
MG was riding high after the launch of the updated MG Hector and Hector Plus a couple of months ago. However, that wave seems to have settled now and the company has recorded a massive 53% decline in sales which is just shocking. In March 2021, MG sold over 5,500 units in our market, whereas, In April, this number dropped down to just over 2,500.

VW – > 1,500 Units
Volkswagen has sold over 2,000 units in March 2021 compared to only around 1,500 units in April 2021 marking a decline of around 24% on a month-on-month basis. VW is counting on its upcoming mid-size SUV, Taigun to change its fortunes in the country. The Taigun will compete against the likes of Hyundai Creta and Kia Seltos.

Skoda – > 900 Units
Skoda saw its monthly sales drop down to below 1,000 in April 2021. In March, the number was not particularly impressive either. Skoda sold over 1,100 units in March and the Kushaq seems to be the only way out for Skoda to finally grab some substantial market share.
Jeep – 846 Units
Jeep marked a huge 37% decline in sales on a month-on-month basis. In April 2021, it sold a mere 846 units compared to over 1,300 units in March 2021. The updated Jeep Compass was introduced at the beginning of this year and the locally assemble Wrangler was introduced thereafter. There are plans to launch the 7-seat version of the Compass as well.
