Launched earlier this year, the third-generation Hyundai i20 has been quick to make a name for itself. One of our favourite bits about the new i20 is its turbocharged petrol engine that’s available with IMT as well as DCT options. While the latter offers lightning-fast shifts, the former allows total control over the gear change without needing to bother about the clutch. All in all, the turbo-petrol version of this B2-segment hatchback is a hoot to drive, but with prices ranging from Rs 8.96-11.34 lakh (ex-showroom), it isn’t exactly too easy on the pocket. However, a quick chat with the friendly neighbourhood Hyundai dealer has revealed that low demand and unsold inventory has led to the Asta IMT variant being sold at huge discounts!

Available at a sticker price of Rs 9.91 lakh, the Hyundai i20 Turbo IMT stock lying at the aforementioned dealership is being sold at just Rs 8.41 lakh a piece! This, in fact, is the exact ex-showroom price of the top-of-the-line Maruti Swift AMT. So, basically, for the same amount, you’re getting a car that is not only from a segment above but also offers more in terms of performance, equipment and street presence. However, it’s important to note here that the official discount on the Turbo IMT version for this monthly is merely amount to Rs 40,000 through a cash discount of Rs 25,000, an exchange bonus of Rs 10,000 and a corporate offer of Rs 5,000. However, a few phone calls made it evident that several dealerships are left with unsold inventory of the Hyundai i10 Turbo IMT and to liquidate it before the vehicles get any older, dealerships are offering discounts of more than Rs 1 lakh.

To put things in perspective, the Maruti Swift ZXI Plus AMT DT, which has exactly the same selling price, comes with a 1.2-litre naturally-aspirated petrol engine that outputs 90PS and 113Nm. The motor comes mated to a 5-speed Automated Manual Transmission. In comparison, the Turbo IMT variant of the i20 features a 1.0-litre turbocharged petrol unit that offers 120 PS and 175 Nm. It comes mated to a 6-speed clutchless manual transmission. While a quick look at the specifications of the two vehicles is enough to note the advantage that the i20 Turbo offers, what the numbers don’t reveal is the better high speed stability and more matured dynamics that the Korean model offers.

Certainly, the discount that’s being provided on the Hyundai i20 Turbo IMT is simply too lucrative. However, it’s worth mentioning here that not all dealers might have enough leftover stock to offer a similar level of discounts. That said, we do urge you to check with multiple dealers in your city and bargain hard to extract the highest discount possible.
