New Mahindra Thar Gets Over Rs 1 Lakh Costlier!

The second-generation Mahindra Thar has been a runaway success. Thanks to multiple body styles – hardtop, soft-top, convertible – and the availability of petrol and diesel engine variants with manual and automatic transmission, many stand smitten by this hard-core off-roader. No wonder, then, that the waiting period for the second-generation Thar has already soared to over a year for some variants. This, in spite of the fact that the Thar has received multiple price increments since it was first launched last year. The recent price hike, which amounts to Rs 92,000, is a pretty significant increase, especially if you take into account the fact that this price revision will lead to the on-road price increasing by over Rs 1 lakh!

Thankfully, however, not all the variants of the new Mahindra Thar have got so much more expensive. The increment in the ex-showroom price ranges between Rs 32,000-92,000, which will still lead to a minimum price increase of roughly Rs 37,000 if you take into account the on-road price of the vehicle. Earlier, prices of the Thar were increased on December 1 2020 as the introductory offer was only for October and November. Prior to that, the entry price of the off-roader went up significantly as the entry-level AX variant was pulled off the shelves within a month of the SUV’s launch.

The new Mahindra Thar is being sold with 2 engine options- a 2.2-litre turbocharged diesel and a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol. The former outputs a maximum power of 130 PS and a peak torque of 320 Nm while the petrol motor produces a maximum power of 150 PS and a peak torque of 320 Nm. Both the engines are available with two transmission options- a 6-speed manual and a 6-speed automatic. 4×4 with low transfer case and differential locks is standard across all the models. Rumours abound that Mahindra could launch a 4×2 variant that will make the product much more accessible.

A reason for the high popularity of the new Mahindra Thar is that it can be considered a serious option for a daily driver due to its reasonably comfortable cabin, modern features, better refinement and automatic transmission options. The waiting period, however, is something that might play spoilsport.
