Tata Tiago CNG to Take on Maruti WagonR and Hyundai Santro

Tata Motors is readying the CNG versions of Tigor and Tiago in India. The launch might happen by the end of 2021. There have been quite a few spy shots in the past where the Tiago is spotted testing with the CNG badge. The reasons are quite straightforward. The ever-increasing fuel prices have left the customers stressed. With the prices of petrol crossing Rs 100 per litre mark in almost all the cities, switching to alternative powertrains seems like the only way forward. This demand can be fulfilled by either CNG-powered vehicles or electric vehicles (EVs). The EVs will take some time for mass adoption but the CNG-type cars have the infrastructure in place and the prices are also not as exorbitant as the electric-powered vehicles. Once, launched, the Tata Tiago CNG will take on the Compressed Natural Gas variants of the Maruti WagonR and Hyundai Santro.

As a result, many carmakers are shifting to either of these alternate powertrains. Maruti Suzuki already has plenty of CNG products in its Indian portfolio. Hyundai is gradually introducing more and more CNG variants across its lineup as well. Tata Motors, being the third-largest carmaker in the country, also plans to have CNG cars. There have been reports of Tiago and Tigor launching with CNG options. Let us take look at what to expect from the CNG versions of these mid-size hatchbacks.

Tata Tiago and Tigor CNG – Specs

The Tiago and Tigor come with a naturally aspirated 1.2-litre petrol engine making 86 hp and 113 Nm. This engine can be mated to either a 5-speed manual or a 5-speed AMT transmission. Of course, in the case of the CNG version, there will be a slight drop in these power and torque figures, as is the case with every CNG car. The exteriors of the Tigor and Tiago will broadly remain unchanged save a few bits signifying the CNG powertrain.

Interiors and Features

The overall interiors of these two cars will also resemble their IC engine counterparts. The feature list will include things like a 7-inch Infotainment Touchscreen by Harman, Electrically adjustable Wings Mirrors with Powered Folding, On-board 3D Navigation through Navimaps, Steering Mounted Audio Controls, Voice Command Recognition, bold 15-inch alloy wheels, Automatic Climate Control and a Digital Instrument Custer, along with a ton more. In addition to this, the Tiago also boasts of a 4-start Global NCAP Safety Rating which is one of the major reasons for people buying these cars. Currently, the Tiago ranges between Rs 4.99 lakh and Rs 6.95 lakh, ex-showroom. The Tigor costs Rs 5.59 lakh and Rs 7.73 lakh, ex-showroom. With the launch of the Tata Tiago CNG, the Maruti WagonR as well as the Hyundai Santro, both of which come with the alternate fuel variant, would lose their edge on the entry-level model from the homegrown carmaker.
