What is Peugeot 2008 Spotted; What is it Doing in India?

It was back in 2019 when Groupe PSA announced its plans to enter the Indian market and introduce as many as three models by 2023. The carmaker launched the Citroen C5 Aircross earlier this year and is now working on bringing the C3 Aircross to the car buyers of India. It was earlier speculated that PSA would relaunch the Peugeot brand in India but later chose to bring Citroen instead. Surprisingly, however, the Peugeot 2008 has been spied on our roads undergoing tests sans any camouflage.

Obviously, there are no chances of the Peugeot 2008 making it to our market but then, you might wonder what is this SUV doing here? For the uninitiated, 2008 is a compact SUV measuring 4,300mm in length, which is similar to what the Hyundai Creta measures. However, at 2008mm, it’s substantially wider than Creta’s 1,790mm. This isn’t the first time that 2008 has been seen plying on Indian roads. It was even spotted back in early 2021, just before the launch of the C5 Aircross. And now, the same SUV has once been spotted ahead of the launch of the C3 Aircross.

What’s worth mentioning here is that the Peugeot 2008 is based on the CMP platform, which is exactly why Citroen, its sister concern, will be seen using for the C3 Aircross. Hence, it’s clear that the carmaker is using 2008 for testing the platform as well as other components that will be shared with the upcoming model. In fact, the test mule that has been spotted could be even testing the 1.2-litre turbocharged engine that will make it to the Hyundai Venue-rival from Citroen. This engine is internationally available in three states of tune – 100PS, 130PS and 155PS. In most likelihood, the India-spec model will come with the 100PS version. Transmission options will include a 5-speed manual and automatic units. This engine and transmission are already being produced by Citroen in India at its Chennai facility for export to global markets.

As is obvious, the Citroen C3 will be seen rivalling the likes of Hyundai Venue, Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza, Kia Sonet, Tata Nexon, Mahindra XUV300, Renault Kiger and Nissan Magnite. The prices are likely to be very competitive to take on the competition and we expect the prices range of Rs 7 lakh to Rs 12 lakh, ex-showroom. This is to be achieved through heavy levels of localization which Citroen is focussing on currently.
