Big Waiting Period For Ford EcoSport Despite Company’s Uncertain Future

Around a week ago, we informed you about a report from popular news daily on Ford contemplating leaving the Indian market. Basically, it is being said that in case the carmaker doesn’t manage to secure investments, it would have to cease production and sell only CKD cars like the Endeavour and Mustang in the country. In case this happens, it will simply mean the discontinuation of the EcoSport and the Figo family. Soon after this news broke out, many potential customers decided to refrain from putting their money on a Ford and several instances of such people cancelling their bookings started coming to light. Amidst all this, we have learnt that the waiting period for Ford EcoSport ranges from anywhere between two to four months. This, in spite of the rather weak demand for the sub-4-metre SUV.

In July 2021, the Ford Ecosport sold just 1,600 units, which is more than 8 times lesser than the segment-leading Maruti Vitara Brezza (12,676 units). In July last year, the EcoSport had sold 2,400 units. Compared to the low sales figures, the waiting period, at 4 months, seems pretty high, especially if you consider that the top-selling Brezza commands pretty much the same waiting. It is being said that the simple reason for this high waiting period is the semi-conductor shortage that most carmakers have been facing.

Also, recently, it turned out that the BSVI Ford EcoSport diesel suffers from major DPF issues. It must be noted here that the BSVI-compliant EcoSport diesel model comes with DPF, which stands for Diesel Particulate Filter. In order to comply with the stringent emission norms, diesel motors need to have strict control over NOx and CO emissions. Basically, these need to be much lower than the BS4 engines. And to achieve this, adding a DPG is the only solution as other means, which might be more effective, but far much more costly. Selecting the other means would have led to a huge increase in the price of cars with low capacity motors, thereby making them exorbitantly priced. However, one of the major issues with the DPF is that it requires frequent cooling.

The issue with the latest Ford Ecosport diesel is that its DPF requires frequent cleaning, which is to drive the car at a fairly high speed for a prolonged this. This is not practical for most as their usage is generally restricted only to intra-city commutes. It’s not fair to expect these users to take out time from their busy lives to drive on a highway in order to frequently clean the DPF.
