In its second generation now, the Mahindra Thar has been an instant success amongst SUV loves and off-roading enthusiasts. The success of this off-roader can be gauged from the fact that the waiting period for it runs into many months and, in some cases, even more than a year! A large part of this success can be attributed to the increased focus on passenger comfort as well as better off-roading capabilities. What this has basically done is to not only attract the regular SUV buyers but even the off-roading enthusiasts. We’ve already seen many videos of the new Thar wherein it has turned out to be more competent than costlier SUVs. In this video, we have a new Mahindra Thar easily climbing a cliff while much more sophisticated (and expensive) Land Rover Defender struggles for traction while going uphill.

The video has been uploaded on the YouTube channel of Anshuman Bishnoi. As can be seen, the Mahindra Thar has to start climbing a rocky hill. While there were spotters to guide the driver to find his way uphill, but it’s quite evident that the SUV could the first section of the hill climb without any struggle or drama. In fact, even though the next section looked more challenging, the SUV could easily clear all obstacles and reach the top. Next, the Land Rover Defender 110 starts the hill climb. Like the Thar, even the Defender could easily clear the first patch but its struggle started the moment it entered the second section of the course. While the Thar could easily avoid a boulder, the Defender couldn’t do so because of its much longer wheelbase.
To make matters worse, the wet surface reduced the traction on offer. One of the wheels can be seen spinning freely due to lack of traction and even though the SUV’s ground clearance was increased before attempting the climb, it doesn’t seem to useful. Finally, the SUV reversed off the hill. Even other SUVs like the last-gen Toyota Fortuner and Mitsubishi Pajero Sport attempted this obstacle and failed to clear it. Ultimately, it was only the Thar that could make it to the top of the hill and the reason for this is its small size. Thanks to a short wheelbase, it enjoys a better breakover angle. It’s also lighter than all high-end SUVs like the Defender.
