Toyota Yaris Hatchback (Maruti Baleno-rival) Spied In India

The Baleno-rivalling Toyota Yaris hatchback has been spotted doing test runs of the Indian roads. This is quite interesting considering that the Yaris sedan did not do too well in our market. The challenge from the likes of Honda City, Hyundai Verna and Maruti Ciaz was just too big for the Yaris to overcome. However, the hatchback form of the Yaris might see better results, or will it? To be honest, it is a brutally competitive segment and the Baleno puts up extremely high sales month on month making it extremely unlikely for any new contender to even compete. But how does the Yaris stack up against the premium hatchbacks of our market, let us find out?

The spy shots aren’t camouflaged at all and the premium hatchback is visible in its entirety. There could be a few possible explanations for it. When a car is not camouflaged, it could mean that the company is not bringing it to India. This vehicle may just be used for component testing and assessing the driving conditions with that vehicles. In any case, the rear of the Toyota Yaris Hatchback showcases a unique design language with a roof-mounted spoiler, shark fin antenna, curved taillamps which are connected by a glass slab, sporty bumper and skid plates. The overall appearance seems to be quite different than anything else out there.

The side profile is quite simple with no particular design creases to get excited about. There is just a slight curve towards the rear wheel arches. The wheels are regular steel rims signifying a base model. The front might look something like the regular Yaris sedan in India. These are the only things visible in this spy image. This is ver much in line with how the international model looks like.

Specs

Internationally, the Baleno-rivalling Toyota Yaris Hatchback comes with 3 powertrain options. These include a 1.0-litre petrol, a 1.5-litre petrol and a 1.5-litre petrol with hybrid powertrain. These engines make 116 hp, 118 hp and 195 hp of peak power and 120 Nm, 140 Nm, and 261 Nm of peak torque respectively. There are also options of a 5-speed manual, a 6-speed manual or a CVT automatic transmission. The real chances of Toyota bringing the Yaris hatchback to India are slim considering it already has the Maruti-source Glanza bringing in the sales.
