Can The Tata Punch ‘Micro SUV’ Go Off Road? – VIDEO

Taking your Tata Punch to off-roading locations might not be the worst idea in the world. Recently, revealed Punch micro-SUV is Tata’s reply to the Maruti Ignis in our market. Punch is targeted towards the semi-urban and rural population as an entry-level micro SUV. Following the burning trend of SUVs in India, Tata wants its customers to have an option of owning an SUV, of sorts, at the minimal cost possible. The idea of a micro-SUV stems from that very approach of making the SUVs more affordable, city-friendly and practical. This has, indeed, enhanced the accessibility of the new-age buyers to the segment. In some images from Tata Motors, the Punch is seen in off-roading environments taking everything in its stride. Let us take a look at it in detail.

The first images in the video show the Punch in slushy conditions. The potholes in the dirt track seem to be filled with muddy water but the Punch is tackling it like a pro. Then there is a section made of pebbles and little rocks. The Punch seems to be gliding over that as well. A real challenge lies in the scenario where the entire surface is uneven and the SUV is in danger of losing traction. One or more wheels might not have enough traction. The high ground clearance of the Punch comes to the rescue in such events. The wide stance and rugged build quality with chunky wheel arches and side body skirting also play a crucial role in enabling the micro SUV to take the road less travelled. It is fair to say that one wouldn’t feel too worried to take the Tata Punch of a little off-roading track once in a while.

Specs

Powering the Tata Punch is a Tiago-sourced 1.2-litre naturally-aspirated petrol engine that is also available on the Altroz as well as the Tigor. This motor outputs 86 hp. Transmission options will include a 5-speed manual and a 5-speed AMT. The expected prices might range between Rs 5 lakh to Rs 8 lakh, ex-showroom. The Punch might also try to drag the customers away from the likes of Renault Kwid, Hyundai Santro and Maruti S-Presso. The upcoming micro SUV from Hyundai, the Casper, will challenge the Punch directly.
