Honda Jazz Bids Adieu to Malaysia, Is India Next?

The Honda Jazz has been a long-standing Hyundai i20 and Maruti Baleno-rival in India but has been selling in really low numbers for many years now. Even in some markets abroad, the practical hatchback hasn’t really posted segment-best sales figures. Also, it may be noted here that the latest generation Jazz is not headed our way while the last-gen model has hardly been in demand. The same car has just been pulled off the shelves in Malaysia and we believe if our market is next in line to see the discontinuation of this B2-segment small car.

The photos you see above show the last unit destined for the Malaysian car market. Painted in Lunar Silver, the car was pictured while leaving the carmaker’s factory in Pegoh, Melaka. Also, Honda has long maintained that the latest, fourth-gen Jazz will not launch in Southeast Asian markets except for Singapore. Instead, the car will be replaced by a five-door version of the latest City.

While it is not for sure if the Malaysian car market will get the City hatchback to replace the Jazz, what’s for sure is that the 5-door version of the popular sedan is definitely not coming to India anytime soon. In India, the last-gen Jazz started its innings with a 1.2-litre petrol and 1.5-litre diesel motor. However, with the introduction of the BS6 norms, the diesel mill was axed and the tallboy is now available only with a 1.2-litre petrol mill that’s on sale with two transmission options – 5-speed manual and CVT.

Last month, Honda Cars India could sell only 667 units of Jazz. Even in July and August, the Jazz could sell only about 500 units each. Also, in the two months before that, Jazz could sell less than 250 units. So far, Honda has no plans of bringing the latest-gen Jazz to our market. Also, with the focus of buyers shifting to SUVs, Honda could launch an India-specific SUV to take on the likes of Kia Sonet. However, other than this, there’s no news of any other new car from the renowned Japanese carmaker headed our way.
