Maruti has already taken the compact SUV segment by a storm with the recently launched Vitara Brezza. The manufacturer now plans to come up with another SUV that will be positioned in the sub-compact SUV segment. Dubbed as the Maruti Ignis, this model is one of the most awaited of all the new upcoming SUV cars in India 2016 here. It is likely to share its engines with the Swift hatchback and could even get an AMT variant sometime after its launch.

Tata will be entering the compact SUV fray with a model based on the Nexon concept.The company is said to be concentrating heavily on the looks of the vehicle, which, they hope, will help them in luring buyers away from the competition. Design of the final production-spec Nexon will be largely similar to the concept that was on display at the Auto Expo. Both petrol and diesel engine options will be offered along with manual and AMT gearboxes.

The Tata Aria crossover was a failure in the market despite being a very capable vehicle. But Tata hasn’t yet given up on the vehicle and is readying the Hexa crossover to have another go at it. Showcased at the Auto Expo 2016, the Hexa is essentially a thoroughly revamped Aria with revised styling and redone interiors. The result is a much more butch looking vehicle with better exterior styling and better interiors. Engine and transmission options will be shared with the Safari Storme and there are rumours suggesting that a six-speed automatic transmission could also be offered.

Hyundai announced the re-entry of the Tucson brand name into India at this year’s auto expo. The Tucson will slot in between the popular Creta and the Santa Fe at an estimated starting price of around 18 lakhs. The design of the Tucson follows Hyundai’s Fluidic Design language with hints of the Santa Fe and the Creta. It will be launched with petrol and diesel engine options. It will be a direct rival to the Honda CR-V. We expected Hyundai to launch the Tucson in October 2016.

New Upcoming SUV Cars in India 2016-2017 – New Mitsubishi Pajero Sport
One of the two upcoming new SUV cars in India 2016-17 by Mitsubishi is the next generation Pajero Sport. The car was unveiled internationally last year and will find its way to India sometime next year. It will be based, as always, on the Triton pick-up’s ladder frame chassis and will feature much more aggressive styling and better interiors as compared to the current car. This will be essential if Mitsubishi wants to take the fight to the next generation Ford Endeavour and Toyota Fortuner. A slightly downsized version of the diesel motor offering better efficiency and slightly more power is likely to be offered along with four-wheel drive and an automatic transmission option.

New Upcoming SUV Cars in India 2016-2017 – Renault Kaptur Small SUV
French car maker Renault recently unveiled a small SUV,marginally bigger than the Duster, for the Russian market. Its styling draws cues from the Captur, which is sold in Europe and competes with the Ecosport. The Kaptur could be launched in India in 2017. It will be positioned above the Duster. Sister company Nissan is also planning a compact SUV based on the recently showcased Kicks Concept. It will be interesting to see if the two companies jointly develop a new compact SUV for sale in India or go their own separate ways.

Jeep Wrangler
The Jeep Wrangler was one of the most anticipated upcoming new SUV cars in India 2016! The much awaited Jeep brand finally came to India in August 2016 armed with two off-roaders. One of which is the Jeep Wrangler. The rugged 4×4 is a completely built unit (CBU), which means it isn’t exactly cheap. The Wrangler is available with a 3.6 litre V6 putting out 285bhp and 352.5Nm torque. It costs Rs. 71.59 lakhs!

Jeep Grand Cherokee
Spearheading Jeep‘s entry into the Indian market is the Grand Cherokee. It is a big butch looking American SUV that rivals the likes of the Mercedes-Benz GLS. Engine options include a 3.0-litre V6 diesel making 240bhp and 5.7-litre V8 petrol making 473 bhp that powers the Grand Cherokee SRT.

Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza
Among the most awaited of all upcoming New SUV Cars in India 2016 was the Vitara Brezza. Starting life as a small SUV concept first showcased by Maruti back at the Auto Expo 2012, the Vitara Brezza hit the Indian car market in March 2016. The Vitara Brezza is Maruti’s first-ever modern compact SUV. The Brezza locks horns with the once formidable Ford EcoSport and even outsells it. The Vitara Brezza shares its Diesel engine with the Swift hatchback, which means that the new Maruti Compact SUV is high on fuel mileage. Yet, it has a decent power output. It is on sale at a starting price of around Rs. 7 lakh.

Honda BR-V
Honda unveiled its all-new small SUV based on the Brio‘s platform called the BR-V at the Auto Expo 2016. It is very similar in design to the rest of the products belonging to the Brio family. The Honda City and Jazz serve as the source of inspiration for the interior design. Powering the new small SUV are the same engines as the Jazz and City. It goes up against the likes of the Hyundai Creta and Renault Duster. The BR-V comes with a seven-seat configuration, which is perhaps the only advantage it has over its competitors.
