New Ultimate Series model will be British firm's fastest road-legal track day car

McLaren Ultimate Series teaser

McLaren has announced that the latest addition to its Ultimate Series range will be unveiled in the first quarter of next year.

The British manufacturer is hailing the currently unnamed hypercar as the most extreme, track-orientated road car it has produced. It will be a successor to the P1, McLaren's first Ultimate Series model.

Details of the car have yet to be announced but it is almost certain to be produced in limited numbers. Although it will be road legal, it will sacrifice some daily usability for an intense circuit driving experience. The design is described as ‘brutal’ and will be the purest expression of the British marque’s ‘form follows function’ philosophy.

The Ultimate Series eclipses the Super Series at the top of McLaren’s Track22 business strategy plan, under which the brand will invest £1 billion into research and development, and produce 15 new cars by 2022. Half of the models introduced will be hybrids.

Following the unnamed Ultimate Series, a second model called the BP23 will follow in 2019. This three-seat ‘hyper-GT’ hybrid was previewed last month, featuring a 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 alongside an electric motor.

The test mule was based on the 720S but with a central driving position reminiscent of the classic F1 hypercar of the nineties. The final design has yet to be revealed, but that hasn’t stopped customers from snapping up the 106 available order slots for the car.
