Mahindra and Mahindra is currently leading the charge in the utility vehicle segment in India. It has been at the helm of this space for a long time. However, with new manufacturers entering this space, the homegrown automaker is now facing tough competition to keep its title. To maintain its strong foothold, Mahindra is planning to launch several new utility vehicles in India within this fiscal year. Among these is a highly anticipated MPV, the successor to Xylo and the new Innova Crysta rival. Codenamed the U321 MPV, it is likely that the homegrown automaker will launch this vehicle in India by the festive season this year. Prices for this vehicle are expected to fall in the range of INR 12 lakh to 18 lakh. The automaker is expected to make this MPV as premium as possible. Hence, it will also come with a host of creature comforts and features on board.

The Mahindra U321 MPV will launch in India this May. However, Mahindra is yet to confirm this. That said, there was speculation that the automaker will showcase the vehicle at the 2018 Auto Expo. This did not happen.

So far no concrete information exists on the powertrain of the U321 MPV. However, it is likely that the vehicle will get a new 1.6-litre mFalcon diesel engine. This engine will produce 125 BHP along with 305 NM of peak torque. A 6-speed manual gearbox will be available as standard. The higher variants will also get an automatic unit, likely to be a 6-speed gearbox as well. That said, the MPV might also get a petrol derivative. The automaker is currently developing a range of petrol engine with displacements of 1.2-litre, 1.5-litre and 2.0-litre. The U321 is likely to get the 1.5-litre unit.

Expect decent fuel efficiency numbers for the U321 MPV. Mahindra will ensure that the mileage figures stand shoulder to shoulder with the rivals to give this vehicle a better chance against the competition. For the diesel derivative, expect mileage figures to be around 18 to 20 km/l. For the petrol motor, they are likely to be around 14 to 15 km/l.
Mahindra U321 MPV Exterior Design
With the help of the recent spy shots, was becomes evident is that the Mahindra U321 MPV will get a bold stance. The front comes with Mahindra’s trademark grille. The rear seems flat with large tail-lamps and tail-gate. Side profile could sharp creases, inspired by the XUV500 and Scorpio. Since the U321 replaces the Xylo, there will be subtle hints of that as well. Overall, expect the MPV to feature premium look. What this means is that the exterior profile will get curvaceous aesthetics with less sharp lines and creases. To increase the premium factor, substantial chrome elements will be used as well.

Just like the exterior profile of the U321 MPV, the interiors are also to sport a premium layout. Going by the spy shots, the vehicle will get a neat and clean dashboard. It is going to feature a dual-tone colour scheme of black and beige. To complement this, air-con vents and door panels will get silver accents. The dashboard will get a large piano black panel, running all across its length. The instrument cluster will get two large dials and a small display of vehicle information. The top-end variant will come with a touchscreen infotainment system. Due to the large cabin, rear passengers will get separate air-con vents.

The U321 MPV will offer a host of features. Apart from a touchscreen infotainment system, the MPV will come with automatic climate control. Higher variants will get leather upholstery, steering mounted controls, reverse parking camera, rear wiper with a washer to name a few. The MPV can get projector headlamps, LED daytime running lights and LED tail-lamps. In terms of safety, the vehicle will get dual airbags with ABS as standard across the range.
