An average new car price of £40k is simply too high for most people

Recently, the Yamaha Aerox 155 was spotted at one of the dealerships in India. It is a premium powerful scooter offering by Yamaha, with an expected price of around Rs 1 Lakh. It looks like a proper racing scooter, like the Aprilia SR 150. However, we expect it might not launch soon in India due to its heavy pricing.

Yamaha has always believed in performance two-wheelers. Most of its bike like the R15, R3, FZ-S all have decent performance qualities. Also, they are said to be quick in acceleration. In terms of scooters, it currently has Yamaha Cygnus, Alpha and Ray. These are decent priced scooters in the market. Moreover, if you see, Yamaha has focused mainly on giving performance two-wheelers at affordable prices in India. Meanwhile, recently, Yamaha Aerox 155, a premium and powerful scooter, was spotted on display at one of the dealerships. It basically comes as a racing scooter with a whopping 155cc engine. The same engine comes in the Yamaha R15. No doubt, the scooter will be the fastest one in India with premium features. But, is there really a need for such high priced performance scooters in a developing market like India? Even if launched, will it survive properly here?

Yamaha Aerox 155 offers complete premium features, hardly ever seen on any automatic scooter. It comes with a 155cc VVT engine that produces 14.8 BHP worth of power and 13.8 Nm of peak torque. It gets a CVT gearbox. Aerox gets 14-inch alloy wheels equipped with Single-Channel ABS. As it is mandatory for two-wheelers powerful than 125cc to have ABS, Aerox gets one. However, the rear wheel gets a drum brake. In the front, it gets telescopic front forks while the rear gets a monoshock suspension unit. Other 150cc scooters include Aprilia SR150 and Vespa SXL 150. However, if seen, these models are not that much in demand, because India is not ready for such high priced scooters. Ideal scooters in demand range from Rs 55,000 to Rs 70,000. Yamaha Aerox is a power packed performer, but not ready for India.

Features of the Yamaha Aerox 155 include 5.8-inch digital instrument display, twin LED lamps, mobile charger, keyless ignition, Fuel Injection system, smart key system and ABS. Barring keyless ignition and FI system, rest of the features are found in many scooters like Gusto and TVS Ntorq. In the Indonesian market, it is priced for almost Rs 1.16 Lakhs (ex-showroom). Well, the Vespa also demands a price near this range, but as you see, it is not a successful one. You might hardly find an Aprilia SR 150 or a Vespa SXL 150 running on the roads.

Concluding, we are not sure if this scooter would not be in much demand in India. Our developing country still thrives for mileage oriented scooters and ideally, most of the scooters are priced between Rs 55,000 to Rs 70,000. Scooter is a basic necessity for Indians, helping in comfortable travelling at low cost. Currently, the demand for lifestyle bikes are growing, but not for lifestyle scooters. So, we expect it to launch in the Indian market, but a little later by another 2-3 years. Currently, if it is available at the dealership, it might be just for testing the customer demand.
