Earlier, we had reported that the Vespa Elettrica electric scooter was going to launch in 2020-21. Sadly, Vespa has said that it might not come anytime soon. The electric scooter concept was showcased at the 2018 Auto Expo.
Vespa currently has a wide range of scooters in India. At the 2018 Auto Expo, it showcased the Vespa Elettrica as a concept. It was a fusion of retro-styling with modern technology and electric powertrain. The E-scooter is currently under the production process for the European markets. Earlier, we had reported that Vespa was planning to bring 2 electric scooters to India by 2020-21. Sadly, the Vespa Elettrica is not coming to India anytime soon.
First, let us talk about its specifications.

Now, the real question comes. Will it work in the Indian market?
As of now, No. Our market is still price sensitive and in terms of scooters, not many people are ready to go above the budget of Rs 70-75,000. At most, people will be ready to pay around 20-25% more than the standard scooter for an electric scooter. So, they have to be under Rs 1 Lakh to become popular.
Given Vespa’s current pricing, we expect it might launch around Rs 1.5 Lakhs. However, it is not happening soon enough.
In India, the Vespa Elettrica will compete with a handful of electric scooters which include Okinawa Praise, Ather 350 and 450 and Twenty-two Motors Flow E-Scooter.

Mr. Diego Graffi, CEO and MD – Piaggio India has commented on this. He said, ” We don’t have a clear plan to introduce the Vespa Elettrica here in India. It’s hard to mention a launch timeline, in the sense that the technology, product, and design patent is there from Piaggio. Whenever we feel there is a need, we can come to the market quite easily, but at the moment, we don’t have a clear plan.”
