Latest reports reveal that Mahindra is going to work with Pininfarina for an electric hatchback. Also, it will work with Ford for an electric sedan. Both the cars are not expected to launch anytime before 2020.
Mahindra is one of the most leading UV makers in India. Their whole lineup consists of UVs only. However, for the past few years, many other automakers are exploring the UV segment and also they have succeeded in achieving good sales. Now, the latest report says that Mahindra is going to work with Pininfarina to explore the hatchback and sedan segment. It is going to launch a hatchback with an electric powertrain. Also, it is entering a joint venture with Ford for sharing the technologies and products. So, with Ford, the homegrown automaker is planning to launch a new sedan, which also might have an electric powertrain.

Currently, Maruti Suzuki is eating up Mahindra’s share in UV space. For this reason, Mahindra does not want to lose out on the EV space, as already, Maruti Suzuki, Toyota, and Hyundai are planning about their EV car launches. It was one the earliest ones in the EV space with Reva and now it has the E20 plus in its car lineup.
Pawan Goenka, MD of Mahindra, told ET that the company may develop a product, which will be fired by electric and will be a hatchback. “For shared mobility providers Ola and Uber, a small hatchback makes good economic sense; it will have more pull in the segment,” said Goenka.

Earlier, Mahindra had showcased us a concept of the electric KUV 100. So, the electric version of the Micro SUV is going to launch very soon. Now, it has 2 products in the lineup which include the sub-compact SUV S201 and the fully grown SUV Y400 (XUV 700). Some weeks back, Mahindra had confirmed that it will not launch any products between April 2019 to March 2020.
Maruti Suzuki and Toyota are going to launch their EVs in 2020 and Hyundai are also preparing itself for that year. It has already announced about the Smart EVs for the developing market. So, the homegrown automaker already has the E20 plus in its lineup and is a leader in the EV space.

As per ET Auto, Mahindra will have to invest around $120 million on the project, if they are planning. Also, it is still unsure as to whether go for an EVerito or build an all-new car. In total, it could cost around $300 millions for electrification of cars, infrastructure, developing the battery and localization of parts.
