A hot version of the new Mercedes A-Class looks set to arrive at the Paris Motor Show next month in the form of the new Mercedes-AMG A 35, which has been teased ahead of its full unveiling.
Mercedes looks set to adopt a two-pronged approach to the AMG fettled version of the new A-Class to give the firm’s all-wheel-drive hot hatch broader appeal. The strategy was revealed to Auto Express last May, with the brand poised to offer two AMG variants of it smaller models to mirror the ‘43’ and ‘63’ strategy adopted by larger cars.
As such, a less powerful AMG A-Class intended to take on the Volkswagen Golf R has been anticipated for some time and will be the first compact model from the brand to be available with two performance variants. It’s thought that the new model will be called A 35 – Mercedes has already trademarked the name.
The teaser images produced by Mercedes leave very little to the imagination, and the new AMG A-Class variant boasts a series of design and aerodynamic tweaks similar to those equipped on the previous generation A 45. That means an aggressive front apron complete with side canards, a similarly sportier looking rear bumper, and a large rear wing perched on top of the hatchback lid.
As for power, Mercedes is expected to use a heavily evolved version of the turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder motor found in the previous generation car. In the new A 45, this engine is expected to reach over 400bhp. For the A 35, the same engine will be detuned, and is likely to offer more in the region of 300bhp.
When order books open towards the end of this year prices for the Audi S3 rival should kick off from around £35,000 – around £10,000 less than the next A 45.
