Honda Brio production stopped; no plans to launch new model soon!

Fresh reports say that production of Honda Brio has been stopped because of declining sales. At a point, the entry-level hatchback was one of the popular Honda cars in India.

Launched back in 2011, Honda Brio became popular for a short time. Its popularity came because it looked cute and sportily fast too. It was not a tall-boy hatchback, which made it look a sporty model.

However, with time, the sales have been declining and in October, it made a mere sale of just 27 units.

Reports say that Honda Car India has taken off Brio from the production line. Currently, it has no plans to launch the second-generation of Brio in India. Globally, the second-gen Brio was introduced a couple of months back.

The sales data for previous months show that around 134 units per month on an average basis were dispatched to dealers. The figures have been dropping for quite a time now. This is the primary reason for the Japanese Automakers to pull off Honda Brio from the line.

The stricter safety rules are also coming up and existing models have to be updated with new norms.

Honda will also have to update Brio with ABS, reverse parking sensors, EBD, a pedestrian compliant bonnet and other safety features as standard fitment. Since the features would increase the cost of Brio, it would continue to fail in the market.

Honda Brio competes with the likes of Maruti Suzuki Swift and Hyundai Grand i10. In a competition to these hatchbacks, Brio stands no chance in terms of features and popularity.

Grand i10 is the most feature equipped in its class and Swift is popular since its first generation.

Brio comes only in a petrol variant. It uses a 1.2 Litre i-VTEC petrol engine that puts out 87 BHP and 109 Nm of peak torque. The engine pairs up with a 5-speed manual with an option of CVT automatic unit.

The hatchback misses out on some key features like a touchscreen infotainment system, projector or LED headlamps, reverse parking sensors, electric ORVMs, push-button start-stop button and more. These features are found in most of the other hatchbacks in this class.

More importantly, it does not offer a diesel engine. Amidst high prices of petrol, diesel cars are a little light on the pocket. Here again, all of its competitors come with optional diesel engines.

Current prices of Honda Brio start off at Rs 4.73 Lakhs up to Rs 6.82 Lakhs (ex-showroom New Delhi).
