Benelli India to Launch a New Motorcycle in October; Is it the Imperiale 400?

At the launch of the Leoncino 500, Benelli had said that they would launch three more motorcycles in India this year and we are guessing this one to be the Imperiale 400.

Benelli will be launching an all-new motorcycle in India towards the end of October. They have just revealed the launch date to be October 25 but have shared no details on what motorcycle it is. At the launch of the Leoncino 500 earlier this year, Benelli had said they would be launching three new motorcycles in India this year, them being the Leoncino 250, the TRK 251 and the Imperiale 400. Our best guess is that the new motorcycle will be the Imperiale 400 considering the other two motorcycles are still some time away.

The Benelli Imperiale 400 is a proper old school motorcycle with retro styling. It gets round headlamps, sprung seats and even a pea shooter exhaust muffler. Its a true vintage looking motorcycle with an old-school style double-cradle steel tube frame underneath. It also gets twin-pod analog instrument cluster which also comes with a digital readout. The simple design is garnished with lots of chrome.

The Benelli Imperiale 400 uses a single-cylinder, air-cooled, fuel-injected 373.5cc engine that makes 20.4hp at 5,500rpm and 28Nm at 3,500rpm. The motor comes paired to a 5-speed gearbox. The numbers aren’t particularly great for this size of an engine and considering the motorcycle has a kerb weight of around 200 kgs, performance isn’t going to be the highlight of this motorcycle. What’s interesting to note is that the engine will be BS-VI compliant.

The Imperiale 400 uses telescopic forks at the front and twin shock absorbers at the rear. Braking duties are taken care by 300mm front disc and a 240mm rear disc with dual-channel ABS and it gets 19-inch front and 18-inch rear spoke wheels. The fuel tank has a capacity of 12 liters.

Benelli intends to achieve a high level of localisation with the Imperiale 400 to keep the prices very attractive and target a wider customer base. The wheels, tyres, brakes and electrical systems could possibly come from Indian vendors. When launched, the Imaperiale 400 will compete against the likes of the Royal Enfield Classic 350 and the Jawa Jawa and while it may not undercut the prices of these locally manufactured motorcycles, it still will be competitive. We expect the motorcycle to be priced between Rs. 2-2.3 lakh, ex-showroom.
